Thinking of jetting off to Fiji this year but have no idea where to start? Here’s our guide to planning your dream trip to the paradise of the South Pacific.
Which is the best island for me?
With 300 islands to choose from, find out which will will best serve your holiday, and then discover the different ways you can experience them. The larger islands boast resorts that are ideal as a base to go exploring, while smaller islands are much more low key. Find the best islands to go snorkelling, wildlife-watching, hiking – whatever it is that you’re looking for for your holiday. You can then go about finding the best deals for that specific activity or tour.

Who knew Fiji had dollars?
The Fijian dollar is at a good exchange rate at 0.32 GBP or 0.62 AUD, which will help to keep costs low. Accommodation and meals included can cost as little as FJD$60 a day, which means you have more to spend on activities, tours and souvenirs. Accessing money on the islands is pretty easy – the hotels can exchange money for you and cash points are available on most of the larger islands – but don’t carry around too much on your person.
Going in for the long-haul
Getting to Fiji takes around 30 hours from the UK with a stop in various locations such as Dubai, Singapore, Sydney and Los Angeles, with the main airports in Nadi and Suva. From Australia, there are direct flights from Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, which take from three – four hours. However long the flight, once you paddle in the clear blue Pacific Ocean, you will feel that the journey was 100% worth it.

No Visa? No worries!
Great news! As long as you’re a national of the visa-exempt countries (including UK, Australia and USA), getting a visa before your visit to Fiji isn’t necessary, as you’ll be given this when you arrive. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after you arrive and that you have return tickets booked.
What’s in the capital?
Suva is Fiji’s capital. Landmarks to take an interest in here would be the President’s Residence, the Botanical Gardens, Suva Wharf and the Suva Municipal Market, where you can find exotic fruit and vegetables and try some local seafood.
Get a bit of culture in you
You can’t really visit Fiji without experiencing a bit of the local culture, and the easiest way to do this is on one of the many tours to the islands. Greeted by Fijian warriors in traditional costume, you can take part in the Kava ceremony and lovo lunch before watching the women weaving and painting and the men dancing with fire. This will give you a huge insight into the Fijian culture and its extraordinary people. Local villages are a whole other experience; you have to be invited first or join a group tour, and it’s recommended to bring a gift such as yagona or kava root for your hosts. How you dress is also important; ladies should have shoulders and knees covered, and take off sunglasses – leaving them on is just rude anyway.
So, if you’re planning a trip to Fiji and want the best experience possible, take a few of our tips on board and you won’t go wrong.
