Planning Your Gap Year To Australia

Planning Your Gap Year To Australia. Australia has been one of the most popular destinations for gap year travellers for many years, with its sunny climate, laidback culture and thousands of miles of coastline and outback to explore. Make sure you have the most incredible experience safely and securely by planning your year out with a clear checklist. Here’s what to keep in mind when thinking about your gap year to Oz.

Visa

If you’re planning on spending just a few months holiday in Australia during your gap year, you can obtain a Visitor Visa (subclass 600) that will allow a three-month stay for you to tour at your heart’s content. However, if you’re looking at working Down Under to get some extra cash for your travels, you would need the Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417), which offers a 12-month stay to work and play, with up to six months with one employer.

Flight

Before you book a flight to Australia, you need to consider when you want to go. When will you have the funds to pay for your travel to and throughout the country? Do you want to arrive at the start of summer (December) or beginning of winter (June)? Where do you want your first stop in Australia to be? Many first-time travellers to Australia head straight to the popular cities on the east coast, like Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, for all the hostels, bars and local amenities they offer. The major airlines you would be looking at are Qantas, Emirates and Singapore Airlines, but there are many others, and be aware that you will stop off at least once in places like Kuala Lumpur and Dubai due to the long distance.

Travel Insurance

It might not be the most exciting point to remember, but travel insurance can save you many times during your gap year. With medical expenses covered up to and even over £10,000,000, as well as theft and accident, it’s vital to have travel insurance should you fall ill or get in a spot of bother. Many places on the high street and online now offer travel insurance to Australia and worldwide, from AA to Debenhams, and it’s worth checking with your bank to see if travel insurance is included with your account, or if you can receive a deal.

Accommodation

Before you jump on your flight, make sure you have secured accommodation for the night you land. You don’t need to book your accommodation for your whole gap year (you probably won’t have planned where you’re going to be for most of it!), but having somewhere for the first few nights will help you get your bearings, meet likeminded people and find out where all the best spots are. The staple accommodation for a gap year is a hostel due to its low price and basic necessities, and there are plenty throughout the whole of Australia. From private double rooms to mixed male and female 16-bed dorms, there’s also a wide variety to choose from with special events, social living spaces, locations right on the beach and even employment advice. Check out our accommodation pages to find the right one for you.

Tours

Wherever you choose to go, every region and city takes advantage of its idyllic area with tours, and you can’t go on a gap year to Australia without experiencing one. It’s unlikely you’ll have to book before you arrive, but if there’s something you’ve got your heart set on, do your research at home and book early. The east coast has many tours to the surrounding islands, including Fraser Island, Moreton Island, Kangaroo Island and North Stradbroke Island, where you can swim in the lakes, drive a 4×4 and camp on the beach with a group of travellers just like yourself. On the mainland, there are bike tours, ghost tours, winery tours, pub tours and hiking tours where you can sample the local produce, abseil down a mountain and discover the hidden secrets of the cities. All of these tours aim to show off the best of Australia, so it’s well worth booking one and making the most of your gap year in Oz!
