Pope Benedict XVI’s Shock Resignation
Pope Benedict XVI’s Shock Resignation After gaining his title in 2005, following the death of John Paul II; Benedict XVI, formerly known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was one of the oldest popes in history to be elected at the age of 78 and will now be the first Pope to resign since the 16th Century.
In a shock announcement, 85-year-old Pope Benedict XVI states his age and deterioration of his health are the reasons to for the resignation, as he feels he will not be able to carry out his duties effectively, “I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry.”
The theological conservative has uncompromising views on homosexuality and women priests, and endured the backlash from one the biggest scandals the Catholic Church faced to date – the sexual abuse of children by Priests.
The resignation, which will become effective at the end of the month, surprised even the Pope’s closest aides who indicated they had no idea of the plans. The period between the Pope’s resignation and the election of his successor is expected to be as brief as possible; however, there have been no confirmed dates for when the cardinals will meet to elect a new pontiff.
