Private health insurance for elderly parents required The senior parents of immigrants who are now living in Australia, are going to have to get private health insurance, as well as ensure they will have financial support from their children prior to them being granted a new temporary visa.

Private health insurance for elderly parents required According to Mr Alex Hawke, the assistant minister for the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, the new temporary sponsored parent visa, which is primarily going to let individuals visit their family members in the country for at least 5 years at a time, is going to be in place by July of next year.

Mr Hawke stated on an interview with several members of the media in Sydney, that the Australian Government wanted the new parent visa to be more affordable, compared to the current arrangements we now have, and this also won’t have to burden the Australian taxpayers.

”If we are to have more aged parents who have come from overseas here with us visiting or staying, we have to ensure that our already overburdened health system is protected from extra cost,” said Mr Hawke.

”It is a key issue.”

This announcement came after a report which was issued by the Productivity Commission. In the report, it is being recommended that there be an introduction of a temporary visa for parents, which is going to allow them to stay in the country with their immigrant children for a longer period of time provided that the sponsoring child is able to meet all the needed costs for health and income while their parents are here.

It is stated in the report that the “cumulated lifetime fiscal costs” of in individual who holds a parent visa under the present system was estimated to be anywhere between $335,000 and $410,000 per adult for the period of 2015 to 2016.

”On this basis, the net liability to the Australian community of providing assistance to these 8,700 parents over their lifetime ranges between $2.6 and $3.2 billion in present value terms,” it was stated in the report.

”Given that there is a new inflow each year, the accumulated taxpayer liabilities become very large over time,” it further stated. ”This is a high cost for a relatively small group.”

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection came out with a discussion paper and it has outlined the 2 categories of parent visas, both of which are already available for those interested to submit an application. One category, it stated, can take “approximately 30 years” to process. Now isn’t that a bit too much of an inconvenience both for the parents and their sponsoring children?

The other stream, though it won’t take as long as the first visa stream to give results, can generally be finalised within 2 years’ time.

”The number of permanent visa places for parents made available in the Migration Programme is small and waiting times can be lengthy,” it stated in the paper.

It was also shown in the DIBP discussion paper that ”the Government’s intention is that any new temporary parent visa arrangement should help offset these issues, while allowing Australia to benefit socially through having united families and cohesive communities.

”At the same time, the financial cost of offering a new temporary visa for parents should not become a burden to the Australian community,” it said.

It was also mentioned by Mr Hawke that this particular visa program is going to be made available to the parents of Australian citizens, as well as those with a permanent residence status, and some citizens of New Zealand who are eligible for the visa.
