Top 5 Prince Moments

This week, the world lost a true icon. American funk musician, Prince, tragically died at age 57 in his Minnesota estate on Thursday. Known for writing the world famous track ‘Purple Rain’, the world is taking a breather and remembering his life. Prince never liked calling his followers “fans” and always referred to them as his friends. To celebrate Prince’s career, here are our five favourite Prince moments.

1. Prince performing at the Super Bowl 2007 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NN3gsSf-Ys                                                                                                                                What is now one of the most iconic half time shows in the history of the NFL Super Bowl, Prince gave the sea of 100,000 American football fans the gig of a lifetime. Playing tracks such as ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, a cover of Hendrix’s ‘All Along The Watchtower’ and Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’, the American funk star made sure there was something for everyone. What made this set so iconic was the closing number ‘Purple Rain’ in the middle of the heaviest rainfall the NFL had seen in 40 years. Not letting the torrential weather bother him, Prince put his heart and soul into this performance. With another 100,000,000 fans watching the set unfold on TV, Prince entertained the world.

2.Release of single ‘Baby, I’m A Star’ https://www.thisismyjam.com/song/prince/baby-im-a-star                                           The song that is impossible to stay still to and one of the musician’s best releases, ‘Baby I’m A Star’ is the perfect summary of everything that Prince’s music was about. The guitar solos, the colossal ego, lyrics that engaged the listener – Prince knew what worked. With lyrics like “Hey, look me over. Tell me, do you like what you see?” the singer was all about seduction through music. Released as a B-side for ‘Take Me With U’, this track never made it into the charts.

3. Interview with Mel B
What is known as one of the best interviews of his career, this crazy interview is full of talk about his latest album at the time, his current tour and cringe-worthy flirting. The interview gives people a personal insight of Prince’s beliefs about life, his purpose when it comes to making music and the relationship with his fans.

4. His two-hour-long surprise show at KOKO                                                                    Known for being incredibly spontaneous with his live shows, Prince had a habit of announcing gigs on the same day via Twitter. However, this particular show took it to a whole new level. After his press team tweeted Channel 4 to tell them about a soundcheck, rumours about a potential show went viral. Within minutes, over 2,000 people were lining up outside KOKO in Camden. Tickets were sold at an incredible £6 on a first-come-first-served basis. The show was made up of over 14 of his greatest hits.

5. His generosity                                                                                                                                  As well as being one of the most important musicians of our time, Prince was also an incredibly generous person, regularly donating to multiple charities. One foundation that he supported was the Edith Couey Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund. This trust fund was created in order to acknowledge the efforts regarding volunteering of students from Cadott High School. Graduates from the high school would be put forward for nomination and would receive a grant to help them with further education fees. Prince also donated to charities such as Elton John’s AIDS Foundation, The Jazz Foundation of America and many more.

Prince was truly a gift and his legend will be sorely missed. R.I.P.
