Re.You Interview

Follow us on Google News

Tech house seems to be going through a purple patch at the moment with many talented artists driving it. One artist who stands out from the pack is Re.You. The German is a very talented producer who is as comfortbale in the live arena (alongside Rampa) as he is in the studio and clubs DJ-ing. He really is unique voice who has released on the scene’s best labels. Off the back of his new label launch, Younion Records, and on the eve of his debut Australian tour,  we caught up with the producer for a quick chat..

1. So this will be the first time you’re travelling to Australia. What other countries have you never been to/performed in which you would love to go to?
I’ve never been to Brasil – what I heard so far is that the scene is massive there. Warung and The Edge are one of the best clubs in the world. So hopefully I’ll get there asap.

2. Your productions always have one eye on the dancefloor, a trait which has seen you release on the world’s most sought-after labels including Cocoon, Saved, Moon Harbour and Kompakt. A very impressive list! How did you get your first track signed and which label was it for?
My first solo release was for Souvenir. I had a strong connection to the guys of Tiefschwarz who supported me since the beginning. The track was called “Lumo” – my friend Rampa was on the flipside.

3. It’s not just the DJ arena where you excel in, and you do a live project with fellow producer Rampa called RAR. How did this come about and what do you have coming up for RAR?
Since Rampa took a year off from Djing for health reasons we also had to stop the RAR project. Maybe it will come back someday. Let’s see what time brings.

4. Music seems to run in your family as both your brothers are producing music too. Did you grow up in a musical family? Did your parents listen to electronic music?
My dad is a big jazz lover. His vinyl collection is huge. When I was younger we went a lot to flea markets to find new music. I guess that shaped me a lot. I was starting a career with my two brothers. We had a project together called Santé, but my eldest brother decided to get pushy so I had to start my own project. When I look back I realise the situation was a good thing and I’m thankful for it, otherwise Re.You might not have happened.

5. In the beginning of your career you played next to acts like Tiefschwarz in clubs like Fabric and Robert Johnson. Which DJ had the biggest influence on your career in those beginning stages
That was Tiefschwarz. I released constantly on their label Souvenir and played great shows with them. Fabric was really big for me as one of my first international shows. I hope they don’t close Fabric down forever! Funny story is that I just signed two tracks of Tiefschwarz for my own label. So the circle closes.

6. Your new label just launched and is called Younion Music. What can you tell us about the first release?
I signed two great tracks from Terranova and Eins Tiefer. I think Terranova needs no introduction – it’s a German producer duo made up of current members Fetisch and &ME who constantly release on Kompakt Records. On the other hand Eins Tiefer is fresh in the game. They are two very talented djs and producers from my hometown Ulm who recently moved to Berlin. I played their track 2 years ago at Fusion Festival in Germany, Nico (one of the guys) was in the audience and was really happy about it. Since then I wanted to release “Dzone” and now I have the opportunity to do it. I think it’s a great package and I’m really happy about the first release.

7. If we were to visit you in Berlin what would be the first tourist activity you take us too?
I would take you to “Brandenburger Tor/Brandenburg Gate” as there is a lot of history to speak about.

8. What would be the one essential travel item you never leave at home?
My noise cancellation headphones. Honestly I don’t know how I could fly without them before.

9. And finally, what has been the biggest track of the year so far for you?
Dj Dust & Breach “Win Ugly”

Tour Dates
Friday 30th September: Geisha Bar, Perth
Saturday 1st October: Nights Like This @ Goodbar, Sydney
Sunday 2nd October: Pawn and Co, Melbourne
