Rejections and delays plague Australian student visa system

Rejections and delays plague Australian student visa system The student visa processing of Australia just went through a few changes recently and it has caused delays and unfortunately, a big rise in rejections in the visa applications. This, according to a report released by The Australian.

Rejections and delays plague Australian student visa system The new Simplified Student Visa Framework which was created to simplify what a lot of people thought was a complicated student visa process, came into effect on the 1st of July of this year however, it has become a threat to Australia’s international education sector valued at around $18.5 billion.

It was stated in the report that thousands of overseas students, most of those who came from China, are caught up in the new system’s seemingly more complex ways. This has forced a number of educational institutions in the country to put off the course commencement.

Ms Fiona Zammitt, the executive officer of the Australian Council of Graduate Research, stated on an interview with The Australian that recommendations from the Chinese Scholarship Council have been forwarded to students who are seeking to continue their postgraduate education in Australia, to just check on other countries’ educational institutions instead. Ms Zammitt also said that there were quite a few applicants who have waited for up to 9 months before they heard anything regarding their visa applications.

English Australia is a body of colleges that run English language colleges in the country and it has already referred to the high number of visa rejections as a true blue crisis.

Mr Brett Blacker, the executive director of English Australia, stated that the new system has just applied the same criteria to Japan’s students who are considered to be low risk, compared to students from the countries of Pakistan and Nepal, who are being viewed as individuals with high risk applications.

A spokesman from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection did acknowledge the glitches happening to the new system, saying that it has caused some delays in the processing of applications.

The spokesman said that the department is targeting to finalise at least 75 per cent of the complete applications in a month.

The sub classes in the student visas were reduced under the Simplified Student Visa Framework in order to make it easier for applicants to study in Australia. No matter what their chosen course to study in the country, international students can now submit an application for a single student visa, which is what is being referred to as the subclass 500 visa.
