Review: Skate King’s Cross, King’s Cross
Roller skating is not my forte. In fact, I struggle to stand on my own two feet, so rolling around on wheels really isn’t something I am ever going to excel in.
However, I decided to put my fears aside and head down to West Handyside Canopy in King’s Cross where, for eight weeks this summer, a pop up roller rink has been installed.
It’s not only the roller rink that’s impressive. All of the Kings Cross area has been rejuvenated, so with an abundance of restaurants, bars and even amazing outdoor space to bring your own picnic – you’re not short of things to eat after burning off those calories on the rink.
Or, better yet, tuck into a burger, fries and milkshake served in true Disco Bistro style right next to the rink. I have to be honest this was the biggest draw for me. Being an American, nothing screams a better night than a burger washed down with a boozy milkshake whilst listening to some classic disco music.
Tying it all together, Skate King’s Cross has done a great job at making you feel like you’ve been teleported back to the 1970s. With old-fashioned skates, disco music pumping out of the soundsystem and American food served in those red-baskets you’d expect to see at a diner, you really do feel like a dancing queen on wheels.
My only qualm is the embarrassment levels that go along with it. Falling on my face three times in front of my date isn’t really smooth or tactful. I suppose I better go back and practice.
