Revolver Upstairs gets new artwork
Revolver Upstairs in Prahan, Melbourne has a new addition this month, with artwork from Anthony Lister featuring on the bar’s poster wall.
Stretching from floor to ceiling, the wall is permanent 3.8 x 3.4 metre space dedicated to showcasing individual works monthly from a wide range of local and international artists.
After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Queensland College of the Arts, Brisbane born Anthony Lister helped pioneer the stencil and street art movement in Brisbane before relocating to Brooklyn, New York in 2003, where he developed a visual language of his own by shifting his focus to appropriating and re-imaging comic muses and superheroes.
The prolific artist is using a variety of mediums to communicate his ideas such as painting, drawing, installation, film and music and over the past five years continually exhibited his work around the world, both in galleries and on the streets. In 2009 he was included in a group show at Opera Gallery in New York alongside such well-established luminaries as Banksy and Blek Le Rat.
Influenced by a number of areas and genres, including street art, expressionism, pop art and contemporary youth culture and often deals with subject matter from popular culture. Through an exploration of the figure, tattooing, graffiti and the urban-scape, Lister reflects on the world around him and how it changes him.
Lister was included in Australian Art Collector’s 50 Most Collectable Artists list in 2011.
