In April the Shoreditch cinema and arts centre presents an exciting programme of live music events bringing together everything from an African takeover over the Easter weekend to a breathtaking audiovisual journey with Soumik Datta.
What: Dialogues Trio with Sirish Kumar Album Launch

Cutting edge original gnu jazz. Long standing classically influenced contemporary jazz trio ‘Dialogues Trio’ here team up with world-renowned tabla player Sirish Kumar. The trio have always drawn on their respective classical backgrounds to create a band with stylistic cohesion and a sense of identity.

In association with Rich Mix a very special Easter Saturday session featuring AFRI-KOKOA and DIRECTION AFRICA on the same day. Direction Africa celebrates the continent’s culture at a time when there is greater focus on Africa than ever before. It consists of film/documentary showing followed by panel discussion and QnA. Afri-kokoa celebrate in the best in contemporary live Afro-inspired music. 4pm to 7pm – Film/Documentary; 8pm to 1am – Live music and DJs AJ Kwame and Volta45 playing a fine dance floor selection of Afro-beat, African Rhumba, Funky Afro, Hiplife, Highlife and Afro-mashups.

London’s only Pan African family adventure chugs in with a dazzling experience of Africa and the Diaspora. All aboard the Mwalimu Express as we pull in to African cities and bring you awesome music from around the continent. Balafon, mbira, talking drum, molo, oud and kora are just some of the instruments to be featured live by the amazing musicians we meet at each destination, plus Max and Rita on the dex spinning the tunes. Come join in the stupendous storytelling sessions, Screen Station films and far out family arts workshops.

In today’s musical landscape, where nothing new seems to be happening in terms of sound, it’s very grateful to hear La Iaia’s songs. Encompassing different folk influences, its music allows us to discover this genre under a different way, totally new, genuine and recognizable.

The Nest Collective (offspring of The Magpie’s Nest – BBC Folk Club of 2010) – has grown to become London’s place to go for discovering the amazing resurgence in music being made under the banner of ‘New Folk, Old Folk & No Folk’.
Formed in 2006, The Nest Collective hosts regular events, creating platforms for traditionally-inspired British and World artists from both emerging and established backgrounds. Musicians and audiences alike come for our unique intimate and un-pedestaled environment, no matter which venue, for the making of music and the opportunity to be part of a shared experience.

Movimientos & Como No presents The London Lucumi Choir Album launch with Gerado Y Su Rumba Ache.Continuing a regular night at Rich Mix, Movimientos joins forces with Como No to present the launch for the first full length album from the London Lucumi Choir as part of La Linea Festival 2012. Led by director / arranger Daniela Rosselson De Armas – who studied Spiritual Song in Matanzas, Cuba – the choir sing songs from the living tradition of Santeria (also known as Lucumi) brought to Cuba from West Africa and celebrate their 5th birthday by launching the CD here.

Circle of Sound: Album Launch and Premiere. ‘One of the biggest new music talents in Britain’ (Vogue), Soumik Datta collides with Austrian drummer Bernhard Schimpelsberger. Tilt’s London Liming is a spoken word party transporting the cosmopolitan vibe of Trinidad ‘liming’ culture to London. In April, Tilt’s London Liming Explores and Asserts Independence with a line up including Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze, Roger Robinson, John Agard and Simon Mole with live music by James Ingham.
