Salary Guide in Sydney for Backpackers: Salary ranges for backpackers in Sydney are very variable and dependent on factors including industry, employment status (casual vs. full-time), and job type. Based on the most recent minimum wage legislation and usual industry norms, we have compiled a comprehensive pay chart for popular backpacker jobs in Sydney below.

Salary Guide in Sydney for Backpackers

Bar Work

Hourly Rate: $25 – $35 per hour (casual rates)

Because of penalty rates for working nights, weekends, or holidays, bartenders often make more than the federal minimum wage. Based on the venue, tips might potentially be a source of additional money.

Restaurant Staff

Hourly Rate: $23 – $30 per hour (casual rates)

Casual wages, including a loading for irregular hours, are the norm for kitchen and wait personnel. At fine dining establishments, the hourly salary and tipping may be slightly higher.

Hotel Staff

Hourly Rate: $24 – $32 per hour (casual housekeeping or front desk roles)

Compared to jobs at the front desk or concierge, housekeeping often pays less.
Weekends and public holidays are subject to different penalty charges.

Farm Work

Hourly Rate: $23 – $30 per hour (hourly jobs) OR piece-rate pay

Earnings from farm labour, such as fruit picking, may range from very little to a substantial amount per hour. The new Fair Work standards state that piece-rate workers must guarantee they earn at least the national minimum wage or its equivalent.

Office Work (Casual)

Hourly Rate: $28 – $35 per hour

Due to the skill required, casual office occupations like data entry, reception, or administrative help often pay more than hospitality.

Supermarket Workers

Hourly Rate: $24 – $30 per hour (casual retail assistant roles)

Under retail awards, supermarket employees may be subject to penalty rates for working nights and weekends.

Drivers/Delivery Drivers

Salaries range from $25 to $35 per hour

Hourly salary plus vehicle usage allowances are common compensation for logistics company delivery drivers.

UberEats Delivery

Structure of Payment: Depending on distance and time spent, the payment per delivery may range from $10 to $20.

Revenue changes with the seasons, geographical region, and hour of the day. Surge pricing may boost revenue during peak hours. Drivers and riders must cover their own costs, including those associated with gas and repairs to their bikes.

Massage Therapists

For freelancing or part-time jobs, the usual rate is $40 to $60 an hour. How much you charge is depends on your level of education and experience, as well as whether you’re working for a spa or massage clinic.

In place of set hourly salaries, certain spas may provide commission-based compensation.
