Scuba Diving At Lena Wreck

For a mesmerising diving experience, you can count on Lena Wreck. Not only is this sunken vessel home to a plethora of marine life, it also has an interesting story that is truly captivating.

A relatively new shipwreck in 2003, the FV Lena was a Patagonian Tooth Fish vessel that was found to be illegally fishing in Western Australian waters. After a chase across the Indian Ocean, she was caught by the Australian Navy nearly 2,000km southwest of Perth. After her capture, she was deliberately sunk less than three nautical miles off the coast of Bunbury. 12 years on, she has become a diving paradise.

With a depth range of 5-18 metres, the Lena Wreck is an experience for every level of diver, being one of the most accessible wrecks today. The entry and exit holes are perfectly safe, and the wide-open internal spaces allow for comfortable exploring, but this doesn’t mean the Lena Wreck isn’t exciting for the more experienced diver. Unlike other wrecks, her engine room has been kept open with the main engine and generators left in place, as has the propeller, which provides an intriguing photo opportunity with the fish that have made it their home.

Speaking of which, the marine life that the Lena Wreck has attracted is astounding. Covered in coral, there’s an abundance of Baitfish, Skippy, Bulleye, Western Blue Devil, Leather Jacket, Boarfish, Octopus and Gobe Fish. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the odd Rock Lobster.

To experience the Lena Wreck, you can take a guided or unguided tour with The Dive Shed. Suitable for up to 10 divers, transport to the wreck and morning tea are provided at $140pp. You can also receive free equipment hire (usually $55) when you mention BBM at the time of booking.
