Seasonal Work In Australia
If you want to see what Australia has to offer and also want to earn some money whilst doing it then seasonal work may suit you. Australia has a lot to offer in terms of all year round seasonal work as you can work the ski season during winter and do anything from waitressing to fruit picking in the summer.
You will need a Working Holiday Visa if you are staying for under 6 months and an Extended Working Holiday Visa if you are staying from 6 months to a year.
Fruit picking jobs are available all year round because Australia is a big enough place to have different climate and weather zones however they are more plentiful in summer. There is so much harvesting to be done that you can decide how long you want to stay at each place and what hours you would like to work. Though it is hard work you can see different regions of Australia as you go from orchard to orchard if you wish.
Other summer jobs are usually in the hospitality, catering or construction trades and Sydney, Melbourne and Perth are the best places to start looking.
In the winter ski season many jobs are available from room attendants and bar staff in the ski resorts to shop assistants in ski hire shops and ski instructors on the slopes. Some jobs even provide accommodation and food and though they take money out of your wages for this it can sometimes work out cheaper than finding your own place to rent. This is a great way to meet like minded people and you can use the slopes on your days off, however you need to be prepared that the work is snow dependant and you could have some slow weeks.
Overall there is no shortage of seasonal work in Australia and you could even chase the sun all year round. In order to secure a position you will need references and a positive attitude but you are sure to have lots of fun.
