Single Review: Katy Perry – Part Of Me
Katy Perry returns with a new offering from her ‘Teenage Dream’ re-release ‘Teenage Dream : The Ultimate Confection”. Seeming like a desperate ploy to beat chart records and score Perry another no.1 from the same album, this song however, is alright in a sort of Katy Perry-ish way.
Shunning the electro pop, ready-for-the-club stylings of the parent album, Perry returns to the rock-pop formula that made her debut album so successful. Opening with a simple guitar riff before breaking into a monster chorus, Perry sings this song with a real conviction, auto tune aside.
This is the first release since her highly publicised divorce from Russell Brand and the lyrics determine this song is surely all about him, singing “forget your diamond ring”. Teaming up with hit makers Dr Luke and Max Martin, this song is Perry’s take on any of Kelly Clarkson’s bigger “I’m so over you, look at me now” hits.
The track is sung with emotion and is insanely catchy, yet feels darker and moodier than her previous singles from the same album and not really suiting the themes of the accompanying album. Maybe it’s time for her to hang up her ‘Teenage Dream’ and focus on that post divorce album the world is waiting for.
