Single Review – Patrick Wolf – Together
The uncontrollaby quirky, Patrick Wolf brings forth new single ‘Together’, a unique slice of heartfelt folk with a techno-electro twist, taken from his recently released album Lupercalia.
The South London based singer-songwriter is known for blending a myriad of styles ranging from classical to the truly bizarre, though on ‘Together’ this has somewhat been throttled back on a track that has one high-top firmly in the anthemic 80s.
A solid fan favourite at his sell-out live shows ‘Together’ is a story of two lovers reuniting in the dark rainy days of December. Surreptitiously ornate in its orchestration ‘Together’ is a grower with hurried harpsichord flicks signalling the arrival of a pulsating synth beat that rises to the songs reassuringly repetitious chorus.
Thrashing the last of the 80s revival for all its worth, it’s the sort of track that could have perfectly accompanied the Flight of the Navigator or as a theme to any other Spielberg inspired family classic.
It’s for that very reason that the song has a certain charm that entices the listener to look further into the unconventional world of Patrick Wolf. Whilst not as instant as tracks such as ‘The City’ and ‘Bermondsey Street’, it is a respectful addition to what is a truly standout album.
