Single Review: The Lumineers – Ho Hey
The Folk Rock band responsible for bringing back a sound that evokes Bob Dylan and The Byrds have made a huge impact in 2012!
Since self-funding their debut album and being signed to Dualtone records, their first single ‘Ho Hey’ has been played on everything from TV shows to adverts (in the States you all know it from the ‘Bing’ search advert and in the UK it’s been showcased on energy ads- is there anything this track doesn’t fit?).
Vocals from Wesley Schultz ring of a time when one take was enough and with no trace of autotune in sight, this side step away from all things contrived is a breath of fresh-folk-air.
Hailing from New Jersey and honing their sound in Denver, there is a genius understanding of traditional sounds mixed with modern “tricks of the trade”- the mixing and mastering of they anthemic ‘Ho-Hey’ sits perfectly in both the back and the foreground – before you know it, you’re as familiar with the catchy yet credible track as you would be with a your favorite vinyl you found under the bed.
In January the DJ John Richards at KEXP-FM in Seattle played ‘Ho Hey’ twice in a row daily for a week and called it the best song of 2012.
The Lumineers stand side by side with the talents of Mumford & Sons and The Civil Wars, and it’s not hard to see why when ‘Ho-Hey’ is everywhere!
