Single Review: These Furrows ‘No Invitation No Welcome’
These Furrows are a pop punk/post-hardcore quartet from Leicester, England. The band is fronted by guitarist and vocalist Darryl Reid, who is supported by the trio of Danny Cooper (bass), Jack Brewin (drums) and Calum Price (lead guitar, backing vocals).
These Furrows have built up a steady following in the last few years after their formation, and have released a handful of EPs since 2009. They now have a debut full length called Treasures ready for release in May 2012, and ‘No Invitation No Welcome’ is the first real taster of the LP.
First taste it may be, but it is not a good taste. Taken in isolation, the song makes a mockery of the claims made by the band’s PR campaign that they are a unique, multi-talented act that cannot be pigeon-holed. If this track is representative of their wider sound then Treasures is not a record worth waiting for. Reid’s irritating, child-like vocals and the clichéd Green Day-like stomp of the music make them sound like little more than a derivative, but technically competent entry in a high school band competition. Perhaps the band’s sound may register with fans of annoying pop punkers like Blink 182 and Fall Out Boy and secure them a position on mainstream rock radio, but ‘No Invitation No Welcome’ is most definitely not worthy of a invite and thoroughly unwelcome.
The song is available as a free download from their website and will be released along with B-side ‘3:16′ as a single, via the Underdogs Music label on 26th March.
