Single Review: Vuvuvultures – ‘Ctrl Alt Mexican’
The oddly named Vuvuvultures are a mixed gender rock band based in London. Three of the band’s members- Harmony, Nicole and Paul- first got together as a group in 2009, and recorded some sessions in Paul’s studio under the moniker Bunny Come. Soon after they added drummer Paul to their ranks, and after Harmony and Nicole returned from extended travels Down Under, the new band got to work on recording songs, as well as playing the requisite countryside festivals and club nights.
The band’s debut EP, VVV, clocks in at around 15 minutes, and was recorded and released in late 2011. It features the track ‘Ctrl Alt Mexican’ along with three other songs; ‘Safe Skin’, ‘Pills Week’ and ‘I’ll Cut You’.
The best way to describe the EP’s opener ‘Ctrl Alt Mexican’ (awful title) is to say that it sounds distinctly like it could have been a Muse outtake from the Absolution era, and perhaps even have made it onto that album. The song is all throbbing bass accompanied with intermittent electro effects and then screeching, loud guitar riff. Admittedly, the song comes with a more restrained female lead vocal on it than the usual Matt Bellamy pained falsetto a Muse song carries. The similarity to Muse is great if you are a fan of them of course, but not so good if you can’t stand the Teignmouth progressive-rock giants.
Certainly, Vuvuvultures have some work to do if they going to carve out a sound fully their own, and one that makes them stand out from the crowded indie rock landscape.
VVV is available online now. Check out the band’s website or Facebook page for more information.
