Six Foolproof Ways To See The Real India

Follow us on Google News

By Geckos Adventures: the world’s finest purveyors of awesome, small group adventures (even if we do say so ourselves).

We know what it’s like, you see an incredible scene from the coach window and just want to stop to capture that moment forever. Well, it’s time to say goodbye to mournful window stares. Hop on a Geckos trip where you’ll adventure-hop from one real local experience to the next. You’ll clamber aboard all manner of public transport, and become the master of the public rails and roads.

1. Rickshaw

You’re right in the thick of it, zig zagging through camels, horses, people, buses and more. Taking a rickshaw will expose you to the elements of India and will probably be one of the most culturally enriching journeys you’ll ever take. Trust us on this one. Make way for Indian music blasting, bells jingling and drivers singing.

2. Camel

There’s nothing like it: cruisin’ along with the wind in your hair as the sun is setting. You’re immersed in an insanely fascinating culture. And you’re on a camel. Rad right? You might come home with pretty sore glutes, but travelling in the traditional Indian way through rich orange desertscapes, can’t get any better than this. Any takers?

3. Bicycle

Saddle up alongside the locals and see India on two wheels. You’ll weave and wind your way through the sites in towns like Pushkar or Mandawa. The roads are (a little) less packed than the bigger cities, so heading out on two wheels means you’ll not only keep your heart rate pumping, it’s also an exciting way to explore the unique quirks of a small town.

4. Local bus

There’s no better way to get a real experience than on a local bus. Especially when travelling in India. You’ll be squashed into places you didn’t think humanly possible, come face to face with all manner of animals and get to meet some seriously awesome commuters. Cue, in-sane travel stories.

5. Sleeper train

One of the best ways to see India – and a super-efficient way to get from north to south, east to west – is the infamous sleeper train. For the ride of your life, grab a third class ticket, pick a pew and get comfy because you’re in it for the long haul. Third class will see you with a (reasonably) comfy bed, seriously underrated air-conditioning, five other friends, plus the occasional call of the Chai Wallahs offering you tea, all in one big, happy carriage.

6. On foot

If all else fails, head out into the bustling streets of India on foot. You’ll run shoulders with the locals and get the low down on streets and eats, (and become sisters from other misters and brothers from other mothers). The simplicity of wandering to find your own way, means you’ll pretty much feel like a local as you sip orange juice at the street corner and bargain for lassi in the markets.
