Spenda C Interview
As Australian DJs go, Spenda C is up there with the highest calibre of musicians. He has driven the local bass music scene for some time, releasing on respected labels such as Klub Kids, Vicious Bitch, Onelove and Ministry Of Sound, and supported from the likes of Diplo, Krafty Kuts and A-Skillz.
Such accomplishments would never have been achieved if it weren’t for the hard work Spenda puts into his craft, for as we speak, he is at home in Enmore, Sydney, “staring down the barrel of an all-nighter to finish off a bunch of projects”. Incredible, considering he’s just finished a 14-date tour of Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
“I was only in Singapore for 48 hours, but I managed to cram in some hawker markets, have a bit of a win at the casino and devour two chilli mud crabs as well as play my gig.”
He played more dates Down Under than many other artists could manage, but we can’t help but wonder whether it’s just another day at the office for this local boy.
“I do travel over the country a lot, but doing an actual tour is a lot of fun plus you get to make some cool artwork to go along with it.”
During the Broken tour, Spenda visited many clubs and venues, some that he’s visited before and others that were a whole new experience. After deliberating, he credits Mouvement in Auckland as “off the charts”, with a mention to Argyle House in Newcastle as “stand-out”. One of his regular haunts and his location for the launch of his new ‘Broken EP’, he speaks highly of Chinese Laundry: “Laundry is always a killer! The launch party was a lot of fun.”
Onto music, Spenda looks to be extremely busy with the lead up to Christmas, explaining that he has “a ton of new music coming in the New Year”, so any summer vacations are out of the question. However, when he does get some time off, he’ll be aiming to head to the beach: “I’m a sucker for North Bondi.”
With direct influences of punk-rock and reggae, as well as his introduction to hip hop and the age of 13, the sound that Spenda produces is unquestionable. His most recent release, ‘Broken’ featuring UK MC Feral, is a prime example of the bass and trap music that we have come to know him for.
“I did a remix of Feral a while back and we kept in contact after that and slowly worked on ‘Broken’ over the course of about a year. It was great to get homies Oski and DJ Butcher on board for the tune as well.”
