Sport In Melbourne This Summer 2015
This summer, Melbourne will take centre stage in sports with a jam-packed calendar fit to bursting that will bring the city to life.
Football fans may be challenged to watch the English Premier League in Australia, but Melbourne welcomes the AFC Asian Football Cup 2015 in January, which will hopefully appease the loss, with teams from Korea, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran and Japan competing. Melbourne Rectangular Stadium will be holding the first match for Australia v Kuwait on 9th January.
Tennis is not forgotten, as the first Grand Slam of the year takes place with the Australian Open. Under the unbelievable heat of the beaming sun, Melbourne Park will welcome more than 600,000 visitors between 19th January and 1st February, including the top tennis players in the world, from Roger Federer to Gael Monfils and Andy Murray.
As we move further into February, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 will take over the whole of Australia and New Zealand from 14th February, with 49 matches over 44 days in 14 cities, but Melbourne will have the honour of hosting the grand final on 29th March at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Motor heads needn’t worry about being left out; in March, the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix will celebrate 20 years at Albert Park Lake, the only F1 race around a lake, with the UK’s very own Lewis Hamilton competing in Melbourne for the opening round.
A city with some of the best sporting venues in the world, with a coastline backdrop and cosmopolitan city centre, there are plenty of reasons to check out the sport in Melbourne this summer.
