The Surry Hills Festival in Sydney, New South Wales is happening September 27th 2014. If you live in the area or are just visiting, come out and join the fun at Crown St, Hill St, Shannon Reserve, Ward Park and everything in between those streets. The festival usually brings tens of thousands of visitors to this suburb neighbourhood. It starts at 10 in the morning and goes on until 10 at night.
As the festival is coming up this Saturday, we at BBM are super kind and want to let you know exactly what is going on on the day and let you know what our top picks of the festival are. Check out what’s on offer this weekend below.
What is the Surry Hills Festival?
The Surry Hills Festival is a wonderful time for the Surry Hills community to come together. It is primarily an annual fundraising event for the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre, giving towards the centre’s community services. The whole area is transformed annually into a hub of arts, culture, and music. Market stalls are on display selling eco-friendly, homemade, vintage, and handcrafted items. Here you can buy sculptures, paintings, furniture, ceramics, etc.

The Surry Festival Hills Creative Trail are a collective of twenty or so creative spaces within the Surry Hills neighbourhood that have opened their doors to the public for the day. There will be events at each location, from an Art Canvas Sale “Inspirational Art from $5” to a free Salsa Dance Class.
Other events include the annual Surry Hills Dog Show (which has been a highlight in the past years and is not something to be missed), Urban Walkabout Guided Tours (including Food Safari, Art Attack, and Design Junkies) that will teach you all there is to know about Sydney’s loved suburb neighbourhood, and historical tours and sketch workshops.
For some tasty food, head over to the Global Market at Ward Park. Food stalls from all around the world are set up here for reasonable prices. If you are looking to donate towards a good cause and have a classy experience, pre-order a Gourmet Picnic Hamper at surryhillsfestival.com. This serves two people food and wine from Oyster Bay.
To find live music head over to Shannon Reserve, Ward Park and The Velvet Cave. Here there are bands playing for forty-five minutes sets all day with events in between the music. Stay the whole night as each venue is transformed into a magical place for people to dance and have a great time. At Shannon Reserve, you can participate in the Revolutionary Disco Dancethon, and at The Velvet Cave you will stay up to the music of live bands and DJs.
Prices
All proceeds go towards the Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre. This includes programs for the homeless, the elderly, and those with mental illness. The Surry Hills Festival accepts donations as well through their website.
