Art talks with Birrunga Wiradyuri

There are few figures in electronic music who manage to combine commercial success with underground respectability. The Bristol-based producer and DJ known as TC is one such individual, utilising his talents to comfortably flit between remixing Number One artists and unleashing rave-razing bass-driven monsters pitched straight at the underground. Sitting atop of an anthem-packed discography that includes some of the most memorable dancefloor tracks of modern times, TC’s debut album ‘Evolution,’ received tremendous radio support and topped both BBC Radio 1’s national dance chart and BBC 1Xtra’s drum & bass chart. TC should need little introduction to any fan of bass-driven music. Now the legend makes his long awaited return to Australia and New Zealand, and BBM were lucky enough to get some time with him before it all kicked off…

Travel to Western Australia

Hi Tom, thank you for your time! This isn’t your first visit to Australia; any standout memories from your last visit that you can share? Do you have a favourite city you can’t wait to visit again?
I really love it in Australia. I love the people, the weather, the food… I’ve got some great friends here. I have to say Perth is one of my faves because the scene is so strong there and I have been there for more shows than any other city. So I’m really looking forward to getting back to Perth for a good old DNB knees up!

You’ll also be going to New Zealand this time around. Have you ever been? Anything in particular that you’re looking forward to?
I have been there a few times in the past. I’m really looking forward to similar things to Australia. It also feels a lot like home in some of the towns in New Zealand. I was right in the middle of the second earthquake in Christchurch which was a really strange and heartbreaking experience, I have never been in a big earthquake before that time and for a good few months I was on edge. I have been back since, the spirit of the city was still there! I’m looking forward to Christchurch, in fact, I am sitting in my hotel in Brisbane as I write this just about to jump on a plane to Christchurch.

So you grew up in Bristol, the birthplace of trip-hop: Tricky, Massive Attack, Portishead…. Were you ever involved at all in that scene? What was it like growing up in Bristol during that very creative time?
I think a lot of the music is just a part of my DNA. Bristol music is an honest music with little bravado but a big sound! I was never involved in the trip-hop thing but I loved it. Always been DNB to my core!!

Rihanna, Daft Punk and Disclosure are just some of the acts that have received a TC bootleg re-rub. How do you decide which tracks will receive a TC mix? Are you a fan of the artists you bootleg? Or even the tracks you remix? Or does it come down to you hearing the potential of a track to become a certified dnb banger?
I won’t bootleg a tune I don’t like, I just wanna grime them up and make them playable. I just did two of the new Knife Party tunes for this tour. A lot of times with a bootleg I just hear the DNB tune behind it and want to let it be a bird and fly!

Another Bristolian who has received a TC re-rub is Julio Bashmore. Have you ever had an interest in the house scene? Have you ever dabbled with house productions?
I have made a few house tunes. I love all music. A wise man once said to me that house is a feeling and I am not sure if I can really make anything credible and I love DNB too much so when I make a house tune I feel like I am cheating on what I know and love!

You like to employ a fast and furious DJ/mixing style which is very engaging to experience and it always keeps listeners on their toes. Have you been DJ-ing like this since the day you started or did it evolve into what it is today?
I have been slowing down a little recently, letting a few tunes breathe… Especially on this tour, I will have longer sets to be able to play everything I wanna play. As with any artist, I am always changing and evolving, that’s why DNB is so great: it never stays still and there is always something new.

Not a lot of people might know this but you had vocal contribution credit on Pendulum’s huge ‘Hold your Colour’ album. Is singing something that you explore regularly? Or would like to explore in your productions? Do you have a favourite vocalist? Who would top your wish list of vocalists to work with?
I love singing and songwriting. It’s a deep passion of mine. I don’t think I am a world class singer but I think I have something to contribute. I would love to work with Pharrell, I love the honesty in his singing. I will be singing on my next album which is well under way!!

Any new or upcoming projects you would like to share with our readers?
An album very soon, hoping beginning of next year. I have the 13 tunes now and I am in the process of swapping one or two out and the obligatory tweaks and changes. A lot of the tunes on the album are already circulating in the scene, being played in clubs in their dub plate form all around the world. I love that about DNB. Keep an eye out!

Right now which country do you enjoy the most when travelling and what would your number one tip/suggestion be for travellers going to that country?
Ahh man, you got to get your ass to Australia and New Zealand at some point – it’s just great!

And lastly, what is the one essential touring item you never tour without?
So many things you need, but Coco Butter is essential – don’t wanna be all dry face! Thanks so much! Big up to all the TC fans around the world! Love you all.
