Techno artist Nakadia reflects on her Australian tour

Nakadia’s progression as a DJ is something to be marvelled at. Right from the start she has proved that her ambition and passion for the music is one to be reckoned with: she toured 9 countries within her first year of DJing back in 2003.

It would be the winning formula for what has so far been a hugely successful career, having hosted the likes of Sven Vath, Loco Dice and Dizharmonia at her own parties on the island of Koh Samui, coupled by a seamless touring schedule around the world.

On the back of her Australian tour we sat down to talk about what she has in store for 2019 and beyond.

Travel to Western Australia

Thanks for taking the time to speak with us today. We understand you’ve just finished a tour in Australia. How was that?

My Australia tour was an amazing experience. I was based in Melbourne for 3 weeks and I just fell in love with the city. My gigs where all great and I met so many wonderful people. It was hard to leave when the tour was over.

What was your favourite show of the Australian leg of the tour?

Of course it was Rainbow Serpent festival. It was a unique experience. Although it was crazy hot, the atmosphere and the vibe of the dance floor was something that you will probably not find anywhere else in the world. I have played some of the greatest festivals such as Tomorrowland or Loveland – but Rainbow Serpent stands out amongst all of them.

In April, you will be releasing a new EP on Ballroom Records, what reaction has this been garnering at your shows?

One of the tracks on the EP, “7 minutes 2 midnight”, I often use as the opening track of my sets. It sets the perfect mood and with this one I can immediately get the floor bouncing. It always works. The second track “Sixth Sense” also works really well. I am very happy with the reactions to this EP.

Further down the line, we understand you’ve put together an EP for Carl Cox’s INTEC – we love Carl down here. How did this come about?

I met Carl in Ibiza last summer and I gave him a memory stick with some of my latest productions. I didn’t hear from him for a long time, so I guessed he would be too busy to listen to it. But then after about 2 months, surely I got the email that he wanted 2 of the tracks on the stick. Some other big labels also wanted the same 2 tracks, so I guess they are probably going to work very well once the EP will come out. I can’t wait for it.

This year already looks incredibly exciting for you on the world stage. What is your summer season shaping up like?

Yes, it’s a great year so far and it could not have started any better. It looks like I will be busy as ever this year again, and probably even a bit more than the last years. I have amazing bookings in Ibiza again plus exciting events and festivals all over Europe. Usually during July and August I play around 15 gigs per month so I am hardly ever home.

If you had any advice to any young DJ’s and Producers looking to emulate your career path, what would you say?

The industry today is a big mess. Nothing works anymore the way it used to work. The Dj industry is super commercialised at this point and it’s a big money industry, so the powerful people are making the decisions and often decisions are not based on music. It’s very hard to give advise, the only thing I can say – if you love music, then play your music from the heart and don’t expect to make a big career. Work hard and enjoy every step of the way and try to be as original as you can be.

And finally, during your trip to Australia, were there any standout places you enjoyed for food or sightseeing that you could share?

I wanted to do so many things, but my 3 weeks in Australia were over so soon and I had barely done any of them. During my trips to Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney I basically just went for a few hours to play my set. I spent all my time in Melbourne. There I visited the usual places like St Kilda or Lygon street. I loved the food in the park next to luna park on Thursdays and my favourite restaurant serving Spicy quail and the best Pho was also just around the corner there (Quan88). As a Thai person I also need my Thai food and I found an amazing restaurant on Bourke Street: Isan Soul. For the rest I didn’t discover anything new, but Melbourne itself was already mind-blowing as an experience.

Nakadia’s upcoming ‘Sixt Sense’ EP will be available on Ballroom Records from 22nd April. Techno artist Nakadia reflects on her Australian tour.
