Our pic of the best cities for backpackers in Australia
Alice Springs
Our home! Woop Woop! You might be wondering why Alice Springs is in our top pick cities for backpackers but anyone who has been there will surely agree. This quirky Australian outback city is arguably one of the most remote in the world and it’s also home to an awesome art scene, great cafes, restaurants, backpacker bars and people from all over the world, all year round. It’s the start and finishing point for many Uluru Tours and one that you need to add onto your Australian bucket list.
Melbourne
Melbourne is energetic, trendy and cosmopolitan. You can go for long walks along Yarra River’s Southbank or go to St. Kilda to enjoy its beach life. Melbourne’s unmistakably European vibe lies in its architecture, numerous theaters and art galleries. Just don’t forget to sample coffee and good food at the city’s numerous cafés, bars and restaurants.

Sydney
The beaches in Sydney are out of this world. You can simply lounge about the beach and contemplate the good life. If you are inclined to have a more active time during your tour, go for a sea plane ride over the majestic waves. Sydney’s nightlife is pretty awesome too.

Adelaide
Much like Napa valley, Adelaide is known as Australia’s wine capital. There are 18 wine regions in Adelaide. You can let yourself indulge in daily wine pairings and artisanal cuisine. The region’s quality music, coffee, beer and beautiful scenery combine in one glorious song to let you enjoy life’s finer things while you are there.

Yamba
Yamba is a popular secret within the surfing community. Yamba coast is celebrated for having some of the best break points in the entire continent. You will fall in love with the laid back Aussie beach town vibe of Yamba and you may even wish to linger awhile.

Byron Bay
Byron Bay is a surf spot where backpackers can safely flock together for endless surfing and partying. If you love the sea and beach life, prepare to spend a week or so in this pulsating yet somewhat laidback town to surf, scuba dive, watch whales (between June to November) and of course party till dawn.

Airlie Beach
Airlie Beach is a busy coastal town where you can soak up the sun and enjoy the nightlife. You can join a sailing trip to nearby Whitsunday Islands from Airlie Beach. Whitsunday Islands entice travellers with gorgeous beaches (some of world’s best). Who would want to skip that?

Surfers Paradise
Surfers Paradise is a party city where people with perfect tans and toned bodies frequent nightclubs. As far as surfing goes, Surfers Paradise does not exactly live up to its name. But you can enjoy the beach in the morning and prepare to party in the evening. If you visit the city in November and December, don’t hesitate to grab a piece of one of the biggest parties ever, ‘Schoolies’.

Fremantle
Once upon a time in the 19th century, Fremantle was a port streetscape. The city still retains tat vibe with its lively markets, quality music, boutique shops, talented street performers and of course mini breweries. Fremantle Prison is now both a world heritage listed building and a sort of a backpacker’s hostel. You can stay at one of the prison cells.

Cairns
Cairns will lure you in with its stunning lagoon and nightclubs. Be warned, you may never want to leave this small city. The Great Barrier Reef is not too far away from Cairns and you can go snorkeling or dive to encounter the mysterious world of sea creatures down below. It is also one of the best places in Australia to party.

Darwin
Darwin is humid but it more than makeup for that fact with the abundance of restaurants, quaint cafés, and restaurants where you can try a diverse range of food. It is one of those backpacker’s havens where travellers can simply enjoy an outdoor lifestyle. Incidentally, many travellers choose to start their outback adventure from Darwin. Darwin is another major entry point to NT for people heading to Kakadu, The Kimberly and our home of Central Australia for epic tours to Uluru and a heap of amazing sights that you’ll encounter along the way.
