Students from all over the world have been increasingly drawn to Australia for its top quality education and student-friendly cities. With almost 1,200 schools, universities and other educational institutions offering more that 22,000 courses of study, Australia has proven to be the best international destination when seeking higher education. It has a diversity of primary and secondary schools, vocational education and training (VET), and universities and colleges, as well as English language courses for international students.  The Australian Government places high premium on international students, and have enacted laws to protect and promote their interests and safety while studying in Australia.

Some fast facts about Australian education:

  • Out of the top 100 universities in the world, seven of these are in Australia.
  • Out of the 30 best student cities in the world, five are in Australia.
  • In the top ranking university systems in the world, Australia ranks eighth, even ranking higher than UK, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands.
  • Australian universities are in the top 50 universities in the world in the fields of Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Clinical and Pre-Clinical Health, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Social Sciences.

The Australian government is serious in providing the best educational experience to its international students and has set up the framework to ensure that this is what overseas students receive. The following Acts/regulatory bodies make up this framework:

ESOS Act 2000. The Education Services for Overseas Students or ESOS Act 2000 are laws governing the registration, Tuition Protection Service, and enforcement and compliance powers to international students studying in Australia.

National Code.  The National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2007 is a set of nationally consistent standards which govern the protection of overseas students. It ensures that these students receive quality education from professional education providers who are registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Thus, overseas students on a student visa may only enroll in courses covered by CRICOS.

TEQSA. The Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency regulates the quality of Australia’s higher education sector, covering public and private universities, and regulates and evaluates the performance  of these education providers against the Higher Education Standards Framework.

ASQA. The Australian Skills Quality Authority promotes quality training in the vocational education and training sector. AQSA makes sure that the standards and reputation of Australia’s VET system is maintained through national regulation.

No matter what course or university you are interested in pursuing  international students can expect only the best in terms of quality, community, protection and commitment from Australia’s world class education providers.
