The Best Dive Sites In Western Australia
Where many ships have met their end and hundreds of different varieties of coral thrive is where you can find the best dive sites in Western Australia.
Abrolhos Islands
Made up of 122 islands, the Abrolhos Islands is a haven for diving activity thanks to the 20+ shipwrecks in the surrounding waters. Despite its attraction to divers, it’s relatively untouched and unspoilt, and is home to many tropical marine life just 60km off the coast of Geraldton.
Busselton Jetty
This manmade structure is the longest timber jetty in the southern hemisphere, but the finishing touch was made by Mother Nature to create Australia’s best artificial reef. Dive here and you can marvel at the abundance of coral, colourful fish and invertebrates in southwest Australia.
Rottnest Shipwrecks Trail
You can find at least 12 vessels on the Rottnest Shipwreck Trail, the first of which to be taken by the surrounding waters of Rottnest Island was Transit in 1842. Underwater plaques offer details of each of the wrecks; Uribes and Shark are suitable for snorkel dives due to their close distance from the shore, while Transit, Raven, Macedon and several others are only suitable for experienced scuba divers during good weather conditions – but the sights are worth it.
Jurien Bay Marine Park
This adventure playground is most famous for its diving experience due to the colony of rare Australian sea lions that like to investigate and have fun with their underwater visitors.
Rowley Shoals
A 12-hour boat trip north of Broome is Rowley Shoals, a marine park of islands, shallow lagoons, plenty of marine life and a shipwreck. With 233 species of coral, 688 species of fish, and an untouched oasis under the sea, a dive here is a memorable one.
