The Dandadda Review At The Windmill, Brixton
Saturday night heralded the launch of one of Brixton’s exciting new acts, The Dandadda and the premier of ‘Heart Attack’, their new track celebrating all things Brixton, whilst also commenting on the hyper gentrification of the area.
The Dandadda is the brain-child of Dan Vinci, a top producer who has worked with the likes of Basement Jaxx, La Roux and Tinchy Stryder. Working with top Jamaican artists, The Dandadda has produced a mesmerising blend of reggae-tinted dance pop combined with live dancers and psychedelic visuals from Nick Savy, a visual artist who has worked with the Gorillaz.
The Dandadda – Heart Attack
The night was an all-round crowd pleaser from start to finish. The initially chilled-out acoustic set accelerated, increasing the base, ramping up the tempo and mirroring the energy of the crowd. Tribal dancers and other onstage musicians built on the electric atmosphere, passing on their excitement to those watching. Hypnotising visuals projected onto the stage were the final element to the contagious mix, making it impossible for the pumped crowd to stand still. The night culminated with everyone invading the stage as dancers, musicians and the crowd alike, lost themselves to the thrill of the music.
The Windmill, one of Brixton’s most celebrated venues, was a great choice for the debut of The Dandadda, thanks to its chilled vibe, friendly atmosphere and pub prices. The smaller venue leant an intimate atmosphere to the night, but arguably something as infectiously alive as The Dandadda needs a bigger venue to allow the crowd to really let loose.
Overall, this is the new act to watch as it seems that The Dandadda can only get bigger. Keep an eye out for any future dates around Brixton.
