Australia isn’t renowned for celebrating Halloween like the Americans, but there are some downright perfect locations to head to if you’re after a spooky 31st October Down Under. Here are some of the most haunting places to spend Halloween in Australia.
Monte Cristo
Considered Australia’s most haunted house, you can spend the night at Monte Cristo Homestead in Junee, NSW – ghost tour included. Stay in one of the comfortable guest rooms, enjoy dinner in the evening and breakfast in the morning. The tour itself is held every Saturday of each month at 7pm. The Dinner, Bed and Breakfast tour is $195pp, but you can just stay for dinner and scarper off after for $125pp.
Coober Pedy
The opal capital of the world, there’s something truly creepy about Coober Pedy. Located in the outback of South Australia, there’s not much in the way of human activity because it’s not an investment to mining companies, but those that do live here live underground in abandoned mines. Even visitors can pitch up a tent and camp underground for a spooky night’s sleep.
The Jenolan Caves
With the legends and stories about the Jenolan Caves and nearby Blue Mountains, it’s no surprise that they are an ideal Halloween location. While there’s no promise you’ll see a ghost as such, the Legends, Mysteries & Ghosts Tour reveals the dark history, strange tales and unexplained phenomena of the caves. Jenolan itself was known to the Gundungurra people as Binoomea, which alone translates to “the dark place”. Hold your lantern tight as you walk through the darkness of the Jenolan Caves.
Maitland Gaol
There are many gaols and prisons in Australia that are great for Halloween, but none have the haunting stories like Maitland Gaol in NSW. 16 men were executed in the gaol, between 1843 and 1897, which were public until 1861. Some imprisoned women were forced to bring their children with them and lived in particularly unsanitary and overcrowded conditions, causing many premature deaths. Maitland Gaol is one of the most famous in the country for its awful conditions, which led to the riot of 1975. You can take guided tours of the gaol, and even attend the Bitter and Twisted beer festival held within the walls on 7th and 8th November.
Fremantle
A weekend in Fremantle is a popular choice for a break from Perth all year round, but its old, haunted buildings make the harbour town perfect for Halloween. Fremantle Arts Centre may host live music events and exhibitions now, but it used to be an insane asylum and would hold 17-20 patients in one room. On 28th – 30th October, another of the town’s famous buildings, Fremantle Prison, will be holding Halloween tours that are sure to put shivers up your back. Enter the gallows – where 44 people were hanged – and prepare for haunting spirits and stories that will leave a dark impression.
