The Natural Wonders of the Peel Region

Follow us on Google News

The Peel Region is blessed with a number of magnificent natural features including 75 kilometres of attractive and accessible coastline; the Peel-Harvey-Estuary and associated waterways; extensive forests and the Murray River Valley. It’s the perfect destination for the nature lover.
Discover the largest Thrombolite reef in the Southern Hemisphere
Less than half an hour’s drive south of Mandurah you’ll find Lake Clifton in the Yalgorup National Park in the Shire of Waroona. There, you’ll see the largest thrombolite reef in the Southern Hemisphere – living fossils that have sheltered in these waters for millennia. One of the by-products of their life cycle is oxygen and over millions of years they created an atmosphere which enabled higher life forms to develop. So this natural jewel actually offers a glimpse into what life was like 600 million years ago! Some things just get better with age.
Serpentine Falls
Serpentine Falls National Park is a gorgeous natural attraction about an hour’s drive from Perth and worth visiting at all times of the year. It’s not only a great place for a swim on a warm day, but also for a bush walk in the cooler months, a BBQ or a picnic surrounded by wild, tame kangaroos. Be amazed by the Serpentine Falls tumbling down 15 metres of sheer granite rock right into the Serpentine River.

Explore the Creery Wetlands
Bird life is abundant in Mandurah and the Peel Region, just perfect for birdwatchers and nature lovers.
The 29 hectare Creery Wetlands Nature Reserve is an important feeding and roosting area for waterbirds and shorebirds which migrate to the Mandurah area every year from Northern Asia and Alaska. Over 130 different species of native and migratory birds nest, breed and feed on the estuary.
Lake Navarino – one of WA’s best kept secrets
Lake Navarino, also known as Waroona Dam, is an aquatic playground and, when full, the surface area covers 145 hectares of which approximately 100 hectares (220 acres) of water is available for water skiing, fishing and canoeing. During late winter Waroona Dam often overflows creating an amazing spectacle. The surrounding forest provides beautiful displays of wildflowers in season. Bush walking and mountain biking are popular activities there.
Lane Poole Reserve – 50,000 hectares of outdoor fun
The Murray area, with its historic towns Pinjarra and Dwellingup, is a wonderland of natural attractions and heritage sites. Enjoy native wildlife and reconnect with nature at Lane Poole Reserve near Dwellingup. There’s an extensive network of bushwalking tracks along the Murray River and numerous opportunities for swimming, fishing, canoeing and rafting, with hire equipment and organised tours available in Dwellingup.
