The New British Traveller: The SoYOLO
More young Brits than ever are going travelling solo, which has led to the coining of the new phrase: SoYOLO.
Young people are deciding to go it alone without friends, whether due to bad timing, lack of funds or busy schedules, and go in search of thrilling adventures. But they’re not on their own.
Those that opt to travel solo can still enjoy the comfort, safety and opportunity to make new friends with group tours. Youth travel experts and providers, Topdeck Travel, have seen a surge in solo travellers booking trips, making up 32% of bookings in the last 12 months at an increase of 10%. Of this number, 84% were females, suggesting that the safety, ease and reliability of group tours were a major factor for women travelling solo.
Another factor contributing to solo travel among young Brits is the idea that they’re never really alone. Thanks to social media, they are always connected to friends and family back home, and can secure connections with people they meet along the way by liking, following or adding them into their network. Topdeck found that while only 10% of Americans and 6% of Aussies will update their social media while on the move, a massive 65% of Brits will post several times a day.
