The Shaw Davey Slum
This ‘60s style venue has been constructed in Carlton as a colourful homage to Australia’s Golden era. The unique interior creates a relaxing space where you can be inspired by the intricacies of the décor, and receive great value for money.
The Shaw Davey Slum opened its doors in May 2014 and marked its spot as a celebration of Carlton’s diverse history. It has been named after two commissioners called Shaw and Davey, who wrote a poverty report in 1958 about demolishing areas known as the slums.
Spread out over two levels, with regular DJ nights taking place on the upper, The Shaw Davey Slum has impeccable food and specially crafted cocktails. Their à la carte menu features filling meat and veggie pies for $12 and a selection of delicious Parma specials like the chicken Parma breaded with corn flakes, with a topping of bacon Bolognese sauce for $19.
The Slum’s food menu is great for meat lovers and vegetarians, especially with the healthy quinoa, halloumi and roasted vegetable salad for $17, which also works perfectly as a refreshing snack before a pulled lamb board for $20. If you fancy hearty bangers and mash then their Italian pork bangers, mash and gravy is the perfect food to keep you satisfied. This beautiful establishment is reasonably priced for an inner city hub.
You’ll be in heaven with their slum cocktails named after all the sweet things your mother wouldn’t let you have – try the creamy Pink Marshmallow Famous for $14, for a hint of spice the Fairy Bread is only $12, while the Jelly Doughnut will honour all of your sugar cravings for $10. Amongst their sugary sweet treat cocktails, you can also sip on a traditional beer or glass of wine.
For those of you designated drivers, you’ll be pleased to know they also do mocktails, which the bartenders will happily mix up for you. The Shaw Davey Slum is far from being a shack in a slum, with its great atmosphere, extensive drinks list and superb food. Make it your new hang out.
