The Taj Mahal: A Symbol of Eternal Love Among the New Seven Wonders of the World

The Taj Mahal, an architectural jewel in the crown of India, was rightfully chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a global poll conducted in 2007 by the New7Wonders Foundation. This iconic monument continues to captivate millions of visitors from around the globe with its timeless beauty and emotional significance.

A Glorious Tribute to Love

Built between 1631 and 1648 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the Taj Mahal is more than just a spectacular structure—it is a monument to everlasting love. Shah Jahan commissioned the Taj in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth. Her tomb lies at the heart of the monument, making it a deeply personal and emotional symbol for people worldwide.

Architectural Marvel of the Mughal Era

The Taj Mahal represents the pinnacle of Mughal architecture, combining Persian, Islamic, and Indian influences. Constructed entirely out of white marble, the monument features intricate inlay work with semi-precious stones, symmetrical gardens, a reflecting pool, and elegant minarets that enhance its grandeur. The central dome, rising over 70 meters high, is perhaps the most striking element, glowing in different hues depending on the time of day.

Recognition as a Global Wonder

In 2007, the Taj Mahal earned its place among the New Seven Wonders of the World through a worldwide voting campaign that attracted over 100 million votes. This public recognition highlighted not only the Taj’s universal appeal but also its cultural and historical importance. It now shares this prestigious title with other global landmarks such as the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu, and Christ the Redeemer.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Besides its recognition in the global poll, the Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. UNESCO praised it as “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage.”

A Timeless Tourist Destination

Located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, the Taj Mahal draws around 7 to 8 million visitors annually, making it one of the most visited landmarks in the world. Whether it’s the majestic architecture, historical significance, or the romantic story behind it, the Taj Mahal offers an unforgettable experience for every traveller.
