A Dead Forest Index – Antique 10″CD Launch with Sarah Mary Chadwick (Batrider) and ‘The Process’ Brothers Adam and Sam Sherry form minimalist two piece ‘A Dead Forest Index’. Originally from Auckland/London, ‘A Dead Forest Index’ formed in 2009 and are currently based in Melbourne. ‘A Dead Forest Index’ create a sound ambitious in contrast and depth. Drawing on simple, yet dynamic elements, leaving sparse, but deliberate structures & washes of sound that centre around the voice. Sunday 22nd July
Communion featuring The Tiger & Me, Liz Stringer, Sam Lawrence and Al Parkinson. Communion, the U.K.’s hottest live music club night, is pleased to announce further details on their move into Australia. After the success of the recent expansion into the U.S. with ongoing monthly residencies in Brooklyn and San Francisco, the collective is proud to confirm a new instalment of its regular monthly event at The Toff In Town, beginning 22nd July.

The monthly event features a different line-up each month offering a creative platform for emerging, developing and established artists to perform in an environment that embraces collaboration and mutual support.

Communion is an artist-led organisation that combines elements of live promotion, publishing, recording and production to create a hub for songwriters and musicians to develop and flourish in an increasingly competitive industry environment. Communion also encourages musical communities to grow and flourish, on and off the stage, amongst artists and audiences alike. The organisation was formed in London in 2006 by musicians Ben Lovett (Mumford & Sons), Kevin Jones (Cherbourg, Bear’s Den), and producer Ian Grimble (Manic Street Preachers, Travis, Beautiful South) in the basement bar of Notting Hill Arts Club. Artists to emerge from the Communion fold include Michael Kiwanuka, Anna Calvi, The Vaccines, and Ben Howard. Reacting against archaic corporate promoting practices, the Communion team pledged to give musicians an equal opportunity to play in front of a sold-out crowd, create a support network around them and blur the line between bands and audiences. Following the underground success achieved in London, the club night moved first to Brighton and then gradually to 15 cities in the U.K. and U.S. Now a fully-fledged promotions company, Communion also puts on events from venues as diverse as the 150 capacity Social on Great Portland Street to the 2,250 capacity Shepherds Bush Empire. Heralded across the British press for its community spirit and a reputation for introducing some of the most highly acclaimed young acts, Communion’s events have become the U.K.’s foremost home for eclectic, exciting parties to respectful, passionate music fans.

Ben Lovett, Communion co-founder/Mumford & Sons notes, “In a time where friendships are formed online, musicians are less overnight sensations than afternoon flash-in-pans and society is living at a pace where fast food seems slow, we are keen to rebuild a sense of Community in the world. Support, respect, brotherhood, growth and development are some of the values that make up the Communion organisation. This exists on and off stage. We champion musicians who encourage one another, regardless of genre, or level of commercial success. This support in turn led to many of our artists inadvertently becoming successful. We hope to continue and build on this reputation”.

Wednesday 25th July
Harts with special guests Thnkr and The Fox party
I am Harts, I’m a solo artist, I write my music and play all the instruments in my bedroom studio. The music is indie rock. But it is also electro dance. And funk. It’s an indie creation. With shredding guitar solos, over synth pads and pounding electro drums, topped with surreal melodies and edgy vocals, the blend of musicianship, style and experimentation has really transcended anything that I could hope to map out on a piece of paper of musical influences. The music is its own thing.
For live shows, I take a different approach instrumentally. I have 2 keyboard players and a drummer alongside me. That’s it. It truly does create a unique live experience, while keeping all the sheer raw energy of a rock show.

My 5-track EP, ‘Offtime’, is set for release in 2012. It was mixed by Lars Stalfors of The Mars Volta. He heard my demos and loved the songs so much he offered to help bring a better and stronger mix to them. He really did help me achieve the sound I sought after. “That sound!”

The track, ‘Back to the Shore’ quickly got picked up by many online blogs, giving it excellent reviews as well as community radio and Triple J airplay.
Now my new single is here. Taking the form of a energetic Post-Disco/Indie Rock/Electronic mash of a track, the single ‘All Too Real’ is the perfect introduction into my world. From the pounding electronic drums to the exploding chorus’, through to the shredding guitar solo, All Too Real is me.
Check it out and I hope you like it!

Naomi Brown ‘Through The Devils Wood’ Album Launch with special guest Lotek
Get Ready for new music by Naomi Braun, with the Launch of her new full length album ‘Through the Devils Wood’, a milkshake of soul, dub, hip-hop, electro and spoken word. People often liken Naomi’s vocal abilities to that of Erykah Badu, Little Dragon, Portishead and Moloko, and the album has production styles akin to that of Massive Attack. She has created a style of music sure to get your hips swaying with juicy delicious beats.

Alongside Lotek supporting her with his established following, British born with Jamaican lineage, Lotek is known as the “Ska Revivalist”. He brings a fast paced skank and a big horn sound to the mix and with his five piece band. His grime and hip hop MCing talent cuts across the rhythms and eggs on the crowd, and with his encyclopaedic knowledge of reggae and hip-hop he clearly knows how the music can intersect. After all, hip-hop comes from reggae. He’s cutting out the middle man. He has collaborated with the likes of Seal, Leftfield and Take That before moving on and becoming a regular at the Big Dada and Ninja Tunes label with his own work and most recently with hip-hop superstar Roots Manuva, Hilltop Hoods and in 2009 Mercury Prize winner for Speech Debelle’s album, Speech Therapy.

Naomi has worked alongside a few well known artists on the album. Sly and Robbie are Jamaican reggae music extrodinaires who have worked with No Doubt, Grace Jones and many more credible artists. LOTEK has also worked with her in the studio, mixing and beat making for the current release.

Sunday 29th July
Don MCGlashan (NZ) with special guests
Don MCGlashan is returning to Australia in July to perform intimate solo shows in both Sydney and Melbourne. He last visited and performed this time last year, and the shows were met with a fantastic response.

One of New Zealand’s best-known and beloved songwriters, Don’s 90s band, ‘The Mutton Birds’ were so popular at home that they relocated to London for four years, were signed by Virgin UK, and toured all over the world. Their third album, ‘Envy Of Angels’, made the UK Sunday Times Ten Best Albums list in 1997.
‘The Mutton Birds’ recently reformed for a tour in New Zealand and are visiting the UK for a one-off show later this year. Sadly, no plans for a Mutton Birds tour as yet for Australia.
Now living back in New Zealand, Don has released a couple of highly-acclaimed solo albums as well as collaborating with other stellar musicians on a wide range of projects. In 2010 he featured on ‘Stroke’, the benefit tribute album for Chris Knox that also includes Yo La Tengo, Lambchop, The Mountain Goats, Will Oldham and Lou Barlow.
Don opened for Crowded House on their 2008 US, European and Australian tours, and was a guest musician with the band. He also took part in Neil Finn’s recent “Seven Worlds Collide” project – collaborating on his own songs with Johnny Marr, and members of Wilco and Radiohead. Recently he’s also been duetting live with Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes and Australian legend Paul Kelly.

David Sheppard of Q Magazine described Don’s songs as “from the same cerebral power-pop mother lode as Big Star and Early REM” and called ‘The Mutton Birds’ 4th album ‘Rain Steam & Speed’ “…a minor masterpiece.” Catch up with Don’s solo show, and maybe try to encourage a Mutton Birds visit when he performs in Sydney and Melbourne.

Sunday 5th August …Just announced!!
Wintercoats with The Townhouses Farewell Tour – Matinee
Before heading off to tour Europe the following week and putting out new releases in August and September, Wintercoats and The Townhouses will be doing one more show in Melbourne as a matinee at The Toff in Town with another act to be announced soon. Come along, have a drink, say hello, or goodbye, and drink a little more.
Wintercoats:
A master of ethereal delicacies, Melbourne’s Wintercoats aka James Wallace combines his chameleonic compositional talents and profound arrangement dexterity to create aural artworks of fragility and grandeur. His debut self-released EP Cathedral adventured through sweeping and idyllic vocal harmonies underpinned by brash and heavily reverbed string loops.
Wintercoats will be releasing his follow up to 2011’s Sketches later this year with another release to follow shortly.
The Townhouses:
Drawing on a world of influences, The Townhouses (Leigh Hannah) has locked himself away for the best part of the year, building an album one day dream at a time. His music is largely inspired by Gamelan, African, Electronic, Experimental and Ambient music – resulting in a collage of different tonalities and polyphonic textures, balanced out by lyric-less lo-fi vocals.
Leigh will be releasing his follow LP to Islands, ‘Diaspora’ in August, so come along for a sneak preview of the record.
$8.00 on the door. Doors from 4.00pm – 6.00pm

Sunday 5th August
The Jed Rowe Band ‘The Ember an The Afterglow’ Album Launch Tour with special guest Nigel Wearne plus very special guests Jeff Lang and Liz Stringer
The Jed Rowe Band are releasing their 2nd album, ‘The Ember and The Afterglow’, through Fuse on 6th July this year and touring nationally through Winter 2012 to support the release. The tour will close with an extra special home town show at The Toff In Town on Sunday Aug 5th with support from Nigel Wearne and guest appearance by Liz Stringer.
Produced by Jeff Lang, one of the greats of the Australian roots-music scene, and a great mentor and supporter of the band, The Ember and The Afterglow was recorded live to tape over 7 days in Lang’s own studio. The process was a joy for all involved, with the sessions capturing the compelling dynamics of the band’s live performance. Guest performances from Lang himself, Liz Stringer, Suzannah Espie and a gorgeous string section further enhanced the creative spirit captured on the album.
