The US Influencer Who Grabbed Baby Wombat Left Australia: Australians were outraged after seeing a video of American influencer and self-proclaimed “outdoor enthusiast” Sam Jones snatching a baby wombat (joey) from its mother. It all happened on a dark, unnamed road when Jones grabbed a joey, and its worried mother chased after her.

A guy recording Jones chuckled in the background as she held the joey by its front legs as it hissed and shrieked on the footage. She waited a few seconds before returning the baby to the roadside.
Political figures, environmentalists, and Australians were quick to react negatively to the clip. Jones faced accusations from critics who wanted her deported and barred from returning to Australia permanently for her social media posts involving native animals.
Protected Status of Wombats
Australian legislation provides protection for wombats. No one may inflict damage or meddle with native animals in Australia without the appropriate authorisation or licences, as stated in the 1999 Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. Wildlife specialists pointed out that Jones probably broke these regulations by handling the animal without a valid reason.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Reaction
“An outrage” was the word used by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to describe Jones’ actions. He condemned her for hurting the mother and her young wombat. He also made the sarcastic suggestion that she could steal crocodiles or some other Australian animal from its mother instead.
Sam Jones’ Apology and Departure
Jones then posted an apology but also condemned the Australian government for their handling of the incident. The fact that their regulations permit the regulated slaughter of native animals like wombats and kangaroos under certain conditions prompted her to accuse them of hypocrisy.
Sam Jones voluntarily departed Australia on Friday morning (March 14) as investigations into potential violations of local laws or visa terms continue.
