Thinking of Travelling As A Couple? Read Our Interview With Go Team Kelly
Ever dreamt of travelling around the world with your loved one? Amanda and Jared Kelly (AKA Go Team Kelly) seem to have achieved just that – from high school sweethearts to Instagram stars celebrating their 10th anniversary, the Kelly’s have nailed travelling as a couple. We caught up with them to chat beaches, bucket lists and being in love…
I understand you’re both from San Diego. Could you name the #1 thing to do for a first timer visiting the city?
Hitting the beach or going to Balboa Park is a given and a major reason why people visit San Diego. Since those are obvious choices I’d say a major must for anyone visiting would be going down to the Liberty Station Market. You can try local brews, local foods from different stands, great coffee and restaurants, hang out with the family at the park or go to the farmers market on Thursday nights. There’s a great path to ride your bike on or go for a run as well. When we first moved here that area was abandoned and kind of creepy but the city has really invested so much into these old navy barracks and it’s become a such a fun area!
We love keeping up with your Instagram and blog. It’s inspirational to see a couple so in love enjoy travelling together! Tell us a bit about yourselves – how did you meet? How long have you been together?
Amanda – We actually met in Jr High! Jared’s dad was the pastor of a church that my best friend had invited me too. I literally kept going because Jared was the hottest guy I’d ever laid eyes on! We dated a little in Jr High and then we dated again in High School. It’s so unique and so special that we’ve gotten to grow up together and grow up in each other’s families over the years. We’re celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary this August and we can fully attest that marriage is both the hardest and the most rewarding things in life. It’s not easy to stay in love or stay together. There are a lot of things that can easily pull you apart. We work really hard to protect what we have and create a space for us to thrive as individuals and as a couple.
You seem to be all over the world in your Instagram posts! How long much time do you normally spend travelling a year?
When we were teenagers we dreamed of being free to roam around. Last year we accomplished a major goal which was to travel for an extended period of time. We were gone for 2 months and it was incredible! We love our home though so we typically do about 1-2 weeks here and there throughout the year depending on the deals we find and as our budget allows. Last year we were probably gone for a total of 3-4 months.
What’s been your favourite destination so far?
It’s so hard to pick! Every place is so beautiful and different. However, we are always ready to pack a bag for either London or Maui. Both spots have become a bit of a ‘home away from home’ for us.
Best dish you’ve eaten whilst travelling?
Oh man! Definitely the sushi from Daiwa Sushi Restaurant at the Fish Market in Japan. Sushi in the States has forever been ruined for us.
Pick your top 3 travel essentials.
1. Wellness Formula
2. Noise canceling headphones/ earplugs
3. Pillows from home (a crappy bed instantly is better with your comfy pillow from home!)
Do you have an advice for first time travellers?
Travelling takes you out of your comfort zone and it’s important to embrace that. Relax, go with the flow and enjoy everything that is different from what you’re used to. Also, try something new! You’re visiting some place new so try a food or activity that you might not try otherwise and see how much you learn about yourself. Lastly, if you’re travelling to a country that doesn’t speak your language, be polite and learn a few phrases.
What’s the #1 thing on your bucket list that you’re yet to do?
Eek! It’s so hard to pick! Our list started out so small before we started travelling but the more we travel the longer our list gets. Right now it’s a draw between Patagonia and seeing the northern lights. That could change next week though!
City break or tropical beach escape?
Both! We live by the beach so we’re okay with not having it for a bit while we travel. We love nature and being outside but we’re also city kids at heart so we don’t really like to be too far from the action. Maui is a great option for both outdoor adventures and a bit of small city action.
And finally, where are you off to next?
We are partnering with Find My Pack and will be joining them for a month of fun in Bali in November! It’s an awesome start up company that joins other travellers and digital nomads together to form a community for a month. Before that…who knows! Surprisingly, we aren’t great planners.
