YUKON BLONDE (Canada) – Peats Ridge Festival sideshow with Leader Cheetah (duo) and I, A Man
Tuesday 3 January 2012 7:30pm
Vancouver’s acclaimed contribution to the world of enigmatic folk/country/indie-rock have amassed a loyal fan base in their home country, but their sun-drenched melodies (reminiscent of a far sunnier climate than from whence they sprung!) and lush harmonies have recently captured the attention of a much broader audience. Most recently referenced on How I Met Your Mother as a quintessentially Canadian band, Yukon Blonde have clocked up monster tour mileage in the past year and a half, including festivals such as SXSW, CMJ, NXNE, CMW & Popkomm in Berlin, and are set to play the Peats Ridge and No Years festivals, plus some intimate sideshows, while in Australia.
Ticket: $15.00 ($3.00 bf) $20 at the door if still available
WHITLEY with Lester The Fierce – SOLD OUT!
Wednesday 4 January 2012 8:00pm
Whitley seamlessly blends organic acoustic flavours with electronic overtones creating songs with hushed, whimsical tales of love and loss. Whitley’s previous incarnations in hardcore and punk bands were tempered when he was dragged along to see alt-country stars Keiran Cane and Kevin Welsh by a friend’s dad. He had an epiphany and was converted to the “songs that made sense” and started listening to traditional country. The result of these influences has produced a folktronic sound all of his own.
Ticket: $25.00 ($3.00 bf)
BUTTERFLY BOUCHER with special guest Katie Herzig (USA)
Thursday 5 January 2012 7:30pm
Australian-born rock pop artist Butterfly Boucher returns home for an extended stay. Butterfly Boucher has made records on three continents, supported Sarah McLachlan, and is now touring in anticipation of her forthcoming album ‘Scary Fragile.’ Special guest at this show is Colorado-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Katie Herzig. Katie will be performing to promote her new album, ‘The Waking Sleep’. She’s toured with The Fray and headlined her own US tours, and her music is at once playful and impassioned, challenging and comfortable, and intimate and epic, such as in single ‘Hey Na Na’, which is exactly what listeners have come to expect of Katie Herzig.
Ticket: $15.00 ($3.00 bf) $18 at the door if still available
THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS (3 sets) with Julian Wu
Friday 6 January 2012 8:00pm
Recently reunited as part of Sydney’s ‘On The Street’ (OTS) live series, the Lighthouse Keepers, featuring original band members Greg Appel, Juliet Ward, Stephen O’Neil and Michael ‘Blue’ Dalton promptly sold out their show the quickest of all OTS shows and left a smile on the dial of all that attended. Following that modest success, the band has decided to crank up the engines once more and take the whole shebang out on the road again. Performing two sets with guest speaker Julian Wu, the young man who played Florence Nightingale to the hideous creatures of ‘80s indie music in his Melbourne home.
Ticket: $25.00 ($3.00 bf) $28 at the door if still available
‘The Mix CD Social’ feat. GEORGIA FIELDS with Duke Batavia and The Barebones (duo)
Saturday 7 January 2012 8:30pm
Indie-pop dynamo Georgia Fields invites you to an evening of assorted aural delights, in celebration of the humble Mix CD. On Saturday 7 January, discounted entry will be granted to all punters who bring along a compilation CD of their much-loved songs. At the end of the night, the CDs will be swapped in a blind lucky dip, and each contributing audience member will go home with a brand new, random disc of mystery music! The Barebones duo open the evening with their raucous, alt-country leanings. Duke Batavia (Ben Birchall’s new outfit), will have you swaying and swooning with their Hawaiian folk, gospel vocals and early rock and roll swagger. Fields will be presenting material from her forthcoming sophomore album, accompanied by a stellar new band.
$15 or $12 if you bring along a mix CD!
BLOOD ORANGE (USA) with Tehachapi
Wednesday 11 January 2012 8:00pm
Life moves pretty fast and Devonte Hynes keeps busy. Following the huge acclaim for his previous incarnation, the 25-year-old bratpack posterboy artist formerly known as Lightspeed Champion completely lost his voice and took a hiatus. Following major surgery and not speaking a word for two months, he re-learned to talk, sing, and reincarnated himself as Blood Orange, the one-man DIY project with a new album, ‘Coastal Grooves’, telling his tales of love and loneliness, such as in first single ‘Sutphin Boulevard’. Blood Orange songs are subtly layered, stripped-down, bedroom-built electronic compositions, while Devonte’s new one-man live show has been honed to near-perfection in the dive bars of New York City, and is currently blowing minds internationally. Be prepared to kill the dance floor when Blood Orange hits the stage at this show.
Ticket: $33.00 ($3.00 bf) $TBC at the door if still available
