Whale Watching Adventure – Ex Brisbane CBD
This coming May, Modular are flying out two of their brightest young things from the UK to premiere their live show to an Australian audience for the very first time, alongside an act set to release one of the year’s breakthrough records. Tom Vek and Kindness will be making their debut voyage across the pond, joining Jonathan Boulet for a mouth-watering triple bill.
The east coast tour kicks off at The Hi Fi, Melbourne [24 May], before taking over Brisbane hotspot The Bowler Bar & Tempo Hotel [25 May] for a special 2-leveled all night affair. The Modular marathon concludes in fine style at Sydney’s Opera House [26 May], with an exclusive performance as part of contemporary music and arts festival Vivid Live. After the honour of curating the entire line-up for last year’s Vivid event, Modular boss Stephen Pavlovic has again assembled an inspiring bill reflecting the current crop of talent coming through the Modular Records stable.
After a 5-year hiatus, in 2011 Tom Vek followed up his acclaimed debut LP ‘We have Sound’ with album #2. Spawning the singles ‘Someone Loves You’ and ‘Aroused’, ‘Leisure Seizure’ has seen a great return to form from the multi-instrumentalist Brit and it’s a real treat to have finally wooed T.V down under for the first time.
Meanwhile, Kindness is the recorded work of Adam Bainbridge and bears the fingerprints of no specific scene, no particular country, no certain era. It’s pop music but it’s slippery and enigmatic, sounds slick yet underground. Critics are calling Adam “The new Prince of bedroom pop” (Mojo) and his debut album ‘World, You Need A Change of Mind’ (co-produced with the Grammy Award winner Phillipe Zdar – Cassius / Cut Copy / Phoenix) has been winning fans the world over including tastemakers Erol Alkan, The Chemical Brothers and Soulwax since its release in March. One hugely successful SXSW later and we’re now EVEN MORE excited to see this emerging star at work. New single ‘House’ is out now.
Completing the triology is homegrown hero Jonathan Boulet. ‘This Song is Called Ragged’ is the current single taken from his forthcoming album – ‘We Keep The Beat, Found The Sound, See The Need, Start The Heart’ [out 8 June] and follows the Triple J approved pre-single ‘Trounce’. Jono will be swapping the Opera House for the Tower of London straight after the tour as he jets off to Europe for a 2-week blitz. X-FM’s Mary-Anne Hobbs is calling the record her “album of the year”, so with that kind of heat it looks set to be a big 12 months ahead for the Sydney man.
