Top 5 Comedy Nights In Melbourne
Everyone’s got a favourite comedian; a man or woman who speaks your language, only funnier. There’s not much better, however, than going out and paying $12 to a bunch of local people telling jokes and being just as funny as one person you’d pay five times the amount to see. Melbourne has got some great comedy clubs and bars that host talent of all types. There’s even an improv night if you like comedy on its toes or you just want a go yourself. Read on for our list of the funniest places in Melbourne.
The Last Laugh
Melbourne wouldn’t be as acquainted with comedy had it not been for the historical home of Australian comedy ‘The Last Laugh’ at the Athenaeum Theatre. Established in 1975, ‘The Last Laugh’ has seen many local and international stars of comedy grace its stage and tell a joke or two and had audiences in stitches. From familiars like Dave Hughes and Dave O’Neil to Ben Elton and Jimeoin, it is laughter on tap. Plus if all that laughing has got you hungry why not pick up a dinner and show package and laugh and become fat like Chaplin did? What a perfect way to warm up on a cold winter’s night in the city.
Fridays and Saturdays, 8pm. $42/$58 with dinner, less without.
The Athenaeum Theatre, 188 Collins Street. Melbourne

Comedy At Felix Bar
Considered to be the funniest suburb in all of Melbourne, St.Kilda, it’s no surprise that Felix Bar is home to one of the best nights of comedy in all of Melbourne. The bar is host to a whole load of TV personalities and comics from home and away (get it?). From Justin Hamilton to Lehmo to Harley Breen, you’re guaranteed a laugh, or at the very least a chuckle, but with cheap drinks and a great atmosphere, you can’t really go wrong on a dreary winter’s Wednesday evening. So pop out and have a giggle. Starts at 8pm, $12, don’t be late.

Comedy At Spleen
There’s only one word for the size of this place: intimate. This 60 person capacity club maybe small in size but it sure makes up in laughs. Packed every single week, Comedy At Spleen should be a place that welcomes comics no one has heard of and sit in silence while they try to make you laugh, pathetically. However this is not the case, Comedy At Spleen is well known for putting on shows of national and international acts that will actually make you laugh instead of cry. Drinks are cheap and the ambience is electric.
Mondays, 8:30pm, free (Gold coin donations appreciated).

The Comics Lounge
Comedy six nights a week is the motto of the Comedy Lounge and it caters for every taste. From stand-up to sketch, from sketch to improv, there is a night for everyone’s taste. The doctor is in and he is prescribing a healthy does of laughter and a little bit of the Devil’s water, and with two fully stocked bars this shouldn’t be a problem. Pop in for a pre-night-out spot to get a couple laughs and drinks in before you hit the clubs or make an evening of it, perhaps seeing some of Australia’s newest on the scene on Tuesdays for ‘Young Guns Comedy Night.’
Monday – Friday, 8pm. $15 – $25

The Big Hoo-Haa
Melbourne’s version of Perth’s very own longest running and most successful improv comedy night. The Big Hoo-Haa is improv comedy at its very, very best. No pretence, no opinions, no being told how the world is. Nope, just simply some props and the first thing that comes in to the performers head. A slightly haphazard evening of comedy but a fine evening of comedy all the same, featuring some of the finest improv comedians from Melbourne, Perth and elsewhere. A manic night that’s perfect if you’re bored of the stand-up on a stage and tell jokes brand of comedy.
Friday, 8pm. $12 – $14
115-127 Russell Street, Melbourne, VIC 3000
