Top Travel Tips for Tackling Western Australia

Follow us on Google News

Most of us have probably seen that meme where Australia’s map is sectioned out into things that will kill you. Crocodiles, spiders, snakes, sharks etcetera etcetera. OK OK we know that it’s wildly exaggerated and the chances of any of those things getting you are slim, but there are things you need to look out for.

Here’s a practical list of travel tips that will make sure your experience of WA’s great outdoors is the best it can be, and memorable for the right reasons only!

In Case of Emergency

Dial triple zero (000) for ambulance, police and fire emergency services and check out WA Police website for detailed safety information for travellers. Keep informed during bush fire season via the Department of Fire and Emergency website.

Sun Protection

WA is home to Australia’s sunniest capital, so make sure and enjoy the outdoor lifestyle sensibly and in safety. Always wear sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses for protection from UV and make sure to drink plenty of water.

Beach Safety

There’s 12,000km of seriously stunning coastline in WA and making the most of it requires knowledge and awareness. Surf and marine conditions can change greatly so make sure to adhere to safety signs, talk to locals and swim between the Lifesaving flags.

Fishing

Though very popular in WA it can be dangerous. Keep up to date with changing weather and wave conditions and know what sort of safety gear you’ll need.

Road Safety

This is one of the world’s largest states, so distances can be long, conditions varied and you’ll encounter large commercial vehicles called ‘road trains’. Familiarise yourself with road rules before getting behind the wheel.

Alcohol Laws

There are strict laws regarding alcohol consumption in WA. To avoid penalties or alcohol-related injury while on holiday, make sure and do your research.

Time Zone

There are three time zones in Australia and Western Standard Time (AWST) is GMT + 8:00.

Protecting the Environment

Help preserve WA’s uniquely biodiverse environments for others to enjoy by following the seven simple Leave No Trace principles and selecting sustainable, eco certified tourism operators.
