The results of the world’s biggest democratic music poll, the Triple J Hottest 100, will be revealed at 12am on Monday 12th December. The poll is a traditional part of Australia day celebrations and has been since 1989, when the first poll saw Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart take the top place, with a selection of punk and post-punk tracks also featuring, including Dead Kennedys’ Holiday in Cambodia, and the Smiths’ How Soon is Now. Australia’s music tastes have without a doubt changed drastically over the years, with The Rubens’ Hoops taking first place last year with nearly 2.1 million votes, and annoying rocker Steve Kilbey in the process.

There has been some controversy around the poll this year with many claiming that holding the event on Australia Day is inappropriate. However, Triple J has decided to release the results on Australia day, keeping the long-held tradition alive for the time being. A petition gathering nearly 5000 signatures was made to change the event, and Triple J executives have stated that they are considering changing the date for next year.

The Triple J Hottest 100 betting odds are predicting that Flume’s Never Be Like You will top the chart this year. Although his track only briefly hit number 1 back in January, Flume has been raking in the accolades, winning a monumental 5 categories at the ARIA Awards last month. Flume – real name Harley Streten – is a national treasure and his first self-titled album released in 2012 went double platinum in Australia. Skin, his second album released in 2016, has attracted positive reviews and features an impressive list of guest musicians including Raekwon, AlunaGeorge, and Beck.

Starboy, the new track from The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk, is likely to be near the top of the list as well. The track hit number one in over 80 countries within just 24 hours of being released and at the time of writing this article had over 330 million views on YouTube. Canadian The Weeknd, real name Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, was born to Ethiopian migrants. His vocal style is influenced by Arabic Makkonen Tesfaye, was born to Ethiopian migrants. His vocal style is influenced by Arabic hasheba singers and has taken him from high school drop-out to multi-platinum, award winning superstar. In 2015, Tesfaye became the first artist in history to simultaneously hold the top three spots in the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart.

Papercuts by Illy ft. Vera Blue is also expected to place high in this year’s Hottest 100. The Frankston, Melbourne rapper’s new track has been a hit, reaching number 2 in the Australian music billboards. He is no stranger to the Hottest 100 as his tracks Cigarettes and Swear Jar reaching number 35 and number 39 respectively in last year’s Hottest 100.
