Turtle Nesting in Queensland
This November, don’t miss the Loggerhead turtles nesting on the Woongarra coast, 14km east of Bundaberg. We thought you’d have been upset if we didn’t tell you. The turtles will be nesting and hatching in a high concentration until March, and obviously that’s not the sort of thing that you can miss now you know.
Mon Repos has played an important part in increasing the population of Loggerhead turtles, whose numbers were drastically declining in 1980. However since 2000 the turtles have been slowly making a comeback, thanks in part to the efforts of environmental groups like Mon Repos, in combination with stricter regulations protecting the species.
Now you can do your little bit to help ensure the Loggerheads’ survival. Watch the babies scuttle to the sea and protect them superhero-style from predators or Disney Villain-esque turtle-nabbing baddies. Morph suits and capes are not mandatory but photos would be appreciated.
A great excuse for a memorable weekend away with someone special, Woongarra is just 20 minutes’ drive from Bundaberg airport. It’s also a five-hour road trip up from the Gold Coast. There are plenty of four and five star campsites for under $20 a night, because who wants to sleep inside in weather like this? And guys, let’s face it, how much more romantic can you get than a night under the stars followed by a walk along the beach with a load of rare wildlife pottering about? Take it from us, that’s a good date.
