Uone Chats Balance And Festivals
Fans of underground electronic music will be aware fo the Balance Series brand. They have been responsible for some of the scene’s most unforgettable CD compilations and have featured artists such as Henry Saiz, Kolsch, Hernan Cattaneo, Deetron and many more. For their upcoming release they have looked towards Australia to shine the light on a local doing great things, Uone, has been an active player in his local Melbourne via his Vision Hound promotions agency, Beat & Path record label and of course, his DJ shows. Of late his booking has seen him spend a lot of time in Europe during the European Summer playing at some major festivals. For his Balance compilation, the Australian has flipped the DJ script by producing a 2CD release featuring productions all touched by his production hand. We got in touch with the artists to get the lowdown on the release and what else he is up too…
1) Hi Uone, thank you for your time. First thing’s first, congrats on the Balance compilation. You will be finding yourself in the esteemed company such as Danny Tenaglia, James Holden, Patrice Baumel and many more. What has been your favourite compilation in the series and why?
That’s a tough question as there are many favourites from the last 17 years of Balance. But would have to say Lee Burridge with his 3 CD compilation, a timeless masterpiece mix. Sharing such similar taste at the time and collecting all those records it was so refreshing to see a Balance mix taken away from the progressive house & dark journeys and brought more in the quirky tech house & melodic minimal sounds. Artists like Ripperton, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, H.O.S.H & Super Flu all featured tracks on the compilation and today have become household names.
2) The tracklist across the two cd’s feature your name on every track. This mix can almost double up as an artist album! Was this always your intention of doing it this way instead of a more traditional DJ mix?
After many years travelling the world, DJing and connecting with so many great producers, it was a natural progression and aspiration to write, produce and mix all of my own creations.
3) Which track from the compilation stands out the most to you and why?
The track Mr Mystic holds a special place in my creative soul as it was born through a cosmic alignment with the supernatural force that is Mojo Filter. We had such a delightful time weaving the tapestry of sounds when our stars finally aligned in the studio.
4) In your hometown of Melbourne, you also run an events agency called Vision Hound. What can you tell us about that and what do you have coming up?
Vision Hound is a platform to showcase the underground electronic music culture and create unforgettable experiences for punters fusing art, music, and performance in a sacred space.
Coming up for the summer:
Nov 2-3-4 CHI WOW WAH TOWN – Our Friends Farm, Melb
Nov 10 -Lake People with LEE BURRIDGE, OONA DAHL, HOJ, SAAND, BONDI – Riva Melbourne
Nov 25- Lake People with Nicola Cruz, Martha van Straaten, Uone & Moontide – Greenfields
April 2019 – RANCH-O-RELAXO Autumn Gathering
5) Talking about Melbourne, who are some of the local artists our readers should keep an ear out for?
I’m fortunate enough now to be running a label with my friends from NZ called Beat & Path. Some of the artists we are nurturing and working closely with are:
Jamie Stevens
Moontide
Thankyou City
Caly Jandro
Danny Bonnici
Philosophia
6) You do travel a fair bit internationally for gigs, which country do you look forward to the most each year and why?
Always look forward to going back to Germany. The Germans love a good party, punters at events are serious about dancing with no frills attached which is how I like it.
7) During the European Summer which festivals can you recommend to our readers?
The mothership of all underground electronic music festivals, Fusion. Boom is another favourite and has been for over 10 years due to its holistic nature.
8) And finally, what is the one essential travel/tour item you never leave without?
My techno towel (thanks to Oliver Koletzki) & Palo Santo
