Volunteer In Tropical Tanzania
Tanzania is a diverse, colourful country that’s famous not just for vast, grass-filled plains such as the Serengeti, but it’s also home to the snowy behemoth that is Mount Kilimanjaro. Offshore lie the beautiful tropical islands of Zanzibar and Mafia, which host a variety of incredible marine life, including turtles, exotic fish and rays.
Vivid coral reefs are a rich feeding ground for countless creatures while out in the deep blue ocean swim dolphins and whale sharks. Over 120 different languages are spoken here, which is to be expected from a country steeped in history and culture. There is no better way to see this exotic location than through volunteering. Check out the following volunteer projects from Frontier to experience it for yourself.
Tanzania Beach Conservation
Despite its tiny size, 40,000 people live on Mafia Island, and there’s plenty of beach conservation you can contribute to. Help protect the coral reefs by observing marine life in and around the area, recording key data and assisting in the fight against unregulated tourism and hazardous fishing techniques.
Swim amongst turtles and dolphins as you learn about the incredible biodiversity in the water and head out by boat to get a closer look at the reefs. Community is key here so you may find yourself teaching English to some friendly locals, in order to help improve their career prospects. In undertaking the Tanzania Beach Conservation project you will be helping to protect an area that will benefit generations to come.
The price for the two week Tanzania Beach Conservation project is £795pp, including pre-departure support, travel and medical advice, a free Frontier shirt, food, accommodation, airport pick-up from Mafia Island Airport and project training. Dive training courses are available at extra cost.
Tanzania Whale Sharks And Turtles
This project is specifically aimed towards people interested in protecting the habitat of whale sharks and turtles around Mafia Island. You’ll be helping to assess the risks, both environmental and human, towards these beautiful creatures. A critical part of the Tanzania Whale Sharks And Turtles project is educating local stake holders, be it by talking about turtle nesting activity or helping to share collected data on the existing whale shark population.
There will also be a chance for you to go into local schools and indeed help educate tourists on Mafia Island. Depending on when you choose to visit, you may find yourself recording detailed sightings of returning whale sharks to the area. This information is vital for understanding shark breeding and migration patterns. Proper marine management of this area means that Mafia Island will remain a must see location for years to come.
A two week Tanzania Whale Sharks And Turtles project costs £895pp, including pre-departure support, travel and medical advice, a free Frontier shirt, food, accommodation, airport pick-up from Mafia Island Airport and project training. Dive training courses are available at extra cost.
Tanzania Teaching Aid And Beaches
By volunteering as an English teacher in Tanzania, you can help young students improve their basic conversational English. This is a superb way to improve your teaching skills in a country where education is otherwise limited, especially if you’re keen to work with children in the future.
As well as having the opportunity to teach eager, friendly pupils you will also be encouraged to play games and sports as well as giving lessons in other subjects, such as music or science. It won’t be all work and no play though as you will be given plenty of opportunities for relaxation.
Depending on when you visit there may also be a chance for you to join one of the existing marine conservation programmes. The Tanzania Teaching Aid And Beaches project gives you the opportunity to help boost children’s English skills, while giving them access to something that’ll continue to benefit them long after you leave.
A two week Tanzania Teaching Aid And Beaches project costs £691pp, including pre-departure support, travel and medical advice, a free Frontier shirt, food, accommodation, and project training.
