Visa Requirements:
Firstly, you must make sure you hold a valid visa with work entitlements before you apply. Check your visa eligibility with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. Of course, if you are a citizen or permanent resident of Australia there is no need to worry about this!
Relevant Experience:
All registered Nurses must have a minimum of 12 months post-graduate experience, and is also preferred for Endorsed Enrolled Nurses (but not always necessary!) All of your relevant experience must be within the last year, and all assistant in Nursing applications must be in their 2nd year or above of a current nursing degree, having completed Nurse Placements.
Registration Requirements:
Australia has a national registration scheme for health practitioners, and nurse registration is actually now managed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. For more info on the requirements for registration from overseas, head to their website and look under the ‘International Qualified Nurses and Midwives’ tab!
If you are a registered Nurse from New Zealand, you are covered by the Mutual Recognition Act, and you have a current practise card, then luckily for you, you can transfer your registration across. We recommend you allow yourself at least 6 months, since the registration process can be quite rigorous for overseas applicants. Don’t let that put you off – we’re just saying don’t commit to any official travel plans before confirming registration in Australia!
Screening and Vaccination Records:
Finally, you must comply with NSW Health’s policy directive regarding screening and vaccination against specific infectious diseases. You must also be able to provide evidence that satisfies the Policy requirements. This usually means documented evidence and proof that you are covered against diseases including Hepititus B, Diptheria, Tetanus, Measles, and many more.
We really recommend that you prepare in advance for these requirements and bring all the relevant bits with you to your interview when you apply.
