Wild Flag- Wild Flag (self-titled)
“What is the sound of an avalanche taking out a dolphin? What do you get when you cross a hamburger with a hot dog? The answer is: WILD FLAG.”
A blitzing opening track ‘Romance’ sets the pace for the awesome band made up from hot as fuck Portland music nerds; ‘Wild Flag’. Strong female vocals cover melodic and slightly grinding electric guitars with a heavy and really solid rock drum backing. Elements of early 90’s female punk-pop bands like Bikini Kill and even harking back to Lene Lovich are definitely in there but this album is slightly more melodically structured and light hearted in essence whilst maintaining a blistering edge of female force; think Magic Dirt and PJ Harvey.
The whole album maintains a consistent up tempo drive and even in the weaker tracks like ‘Glass Tambourine’ there is some good strong lyrical content exposing the bands opinion on today’s music scene; “Listen to the music, you’re gonna lose it” which redeem the albums integrity.
To people who don’t like this kind of music the whole album could sound a bit similar but for those fans of strong and tight punk based noise and powerful female vocals this album is very accessible and a really fun listen.
