Winter Holidays In Western Australia
Due to its great size, the climate in south Western Australia can be very different from the north of the state. If you don’t want to lose the sun, the following destinations provide a winter holiday with an added bonus of amazing activities.
Karijini
Due to the very hot temperatures and huge rainfall, you wouldn’t even want to go to the Karijini in summer, so the cooler and calmer weather of winter is perfect for discovering this adventure playground. At highs of 24 degrees in July, it’s still pleasant; just make sure you pack warm clothing for the nights, as they can be cold. The Karijini is more accessible in winter as it’s the dry season, so you can walk through gorges and get close to pools and waterfalls – they just might not be flowing as full as in the summer!
Broome
The biggest town in the Kimberley region, Broome should be on everyone’s hit list. Not only is it blessed with spectacular beaches, breath taking moon rises, beautiful pearls, cultural events and rugged coastal cliffs, it has idyllic temperatures in winter. Reaching up to 29 degrees, it’s not even a dramatic drop from the summer, so you can expect a rush of visitors desperate to extend their summer holiday between June and August.
Exmouth
There are some enormous reasons to visit Exmouth during winter. While much cooler than the summer, it still retains a high of 24 degrees, and has more than human visitors to its shores. From March to July, you can come face-to-face with the ocean’s largest fish – the gentle whale shark. And from June to November, humpback whales kick off whale watching season. With these two giants in the water, tours come into peak season with snorkelling, diving and glass-bottom boats at large.
Gibb River Road
If you’re up for an epic drive, the 660km of Gibb River Road open up between May and October for a unique 4WD experience. Starting in Derby and finishing in Kununurra, it showcases many of the Kimberley’s finest treasures during dry season, including Bell Gorge, Windjana Gorge, El Questro Station and Manning Gorge. A true test for any explorer, look out for fresh and salt water crocodiles inhabiting the rivers.
