The Ultimate Working Holiday Checklist

Follow us on Google News

A working holiday visa can open up a world of opportunities; for 12 months, those aged 18-30 can live in the land of sun, sea and surf while also earning money. But before you set off, there are some vital things you need to consider; make sure you have everything on our checklist for a year down under to you’re sure to remember.

Secure an Australian Visa

If you’re going to make it into Australia in the first place, you’re going to need a visa. A working holiday visa legally allows you to live and work in Oz for 12 months, this is very easy to apply for and can be done via border.gov website or right here on our very own visa page. If you’re planning on potentially staying in Australia for longer than 12 months and would like to secure a sponsorship or permanent residency to live in Australia longer then it can be a long and tortuous process. Luckily help is at hand with Immigration2oz, the immigration consultant specialists that can provide you with a free visa evaluation, and help you prepare your paperwork and advice you on a suitable visa specifically for your skill set before you go. Thus taking a lot of pain out of the process and potentially saving you hundreds, or even thousands of pounds.

Australian Tax File Number

If you’re going to be working in Oz, you’ll need a tax file number, which you can get by filling out a form that you need to apply for either online or over the phone. Find out more at www.ato.gov.au

Bank account

With a job comes a steady income, which will need to go into a bank account. Set one up before you go with the National Australian Bank to make sure you have sufficient funds upon arrival. You should also have a minimum of $5000 AUD when you enter the country to ensure you can support yourself and pay for a flight home.

First accommodation

When you first step off the 24 hour flight, the last thing you’ll want to do is find somewhere to stay. Book a room in a hostel for a few nights before embarking on your big adventure to recover from jetlag and freshen up. From Wakeup! Sydney, to YHA’s across the country, there are countless options for affordable accommodation.

Travel insurance

In the unfortunate event that not everything goes to plan, it is vital that you’re covered by travel insurance. Not only will it help you stay safe, it will put your mind at rest while you’re on your adventures.

If you’re thinking about taking a working holiday in Oz and want some more information, why not visit our Moving Down Under event on 16th April 2016.
