Nurses Registration Board
Nurses with overseas qualifications must first register with the Nurses Registration Board in the state where they want to work. To work as a registered nurse, enrolled nurse, nurse practitioner or midwife in Australia, you must be registered with the NMBA.
As part of its public protection role, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) in partnership with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is responsible for assessing registration applications from internationally qualified nurses and midwives (IQNMs) to ensure they are suitably trained and qualified for registration in Australia.
The qualification assessment criteria
Since 2019, the NMBA has revised the assessment criteria for IQNMs. The revised criteria will streamline the qualification assessment process; however, the outcomes from assessments will be the same as under the previous criteria. IQNM qualifications are assessed against the qualification criteria under section 53(b) of the National Law.
Each qualification is assessed against the following three criteria:
- A qualification recognised for registration
- Quality assurance and accreditation
- The academic level of qualification
Good level of English
To be a nurse in Australia, you must also have good English. You may not be required to take an IELTS test if you are from the UK, the USA, Canada, Ireland, or New Zealand. However, professionals from other countries must comply and obtain a passing mark. Going through the process to get a working holiday visa is not that hard. It’s a form on the Australian government website. Follow the instructions and fill out the form. You’ll need your passport with you!
Medical screening
Most people applying for the Working Holiday Australia Visa can fill out the form and forget about it, but for nurses, the work isn’t over yet. The form will ask whether or not you intend to work in a health care setting. Obviously, this answer will be yes. You will then be informed that you must attend a medical screening. Your visa will not be looked at until you have a medical check-up.
Can you have a check-up before applying for the visa? Nope. You must take a specific number when you go for a medical for the Australian Working Holiday Visa as a nurse. You will be asked for the number on your application form when you book your medical. As far as medicals go, they are pretty straightforward, but you must visit a specific immigration panel doctor. You can’t go to the GP fit or get it on getHS.
Finding accommodation
Finding hostels, a flatmate, a budget hotel, or other cheap accommodation is an important part of your working holiday in Australia trip. Depending on your budget, your comfort zone, your travel style, and your relationship status, there are many options for finding the right accommodation to suit your short-term and long-term needs.
