Young Dreams – Young Dreams
If you hadn’t noticed, wispy, Beach Boys-obsessed dream pop has been majorly doing the rounds this year and Norway’s Young Dreams are no stranger to the trend with their new self titled single ‘Young Dreams.’
Take, for instance, Danish foursome Treefight for Sunlight’s pine-fresh single ‘Facing the Sun’ – a gorgeously cascading tune of intricate harmonies and baroque keys and elsewhere, Summer Camp and The Drums have been bothering milkmen with their cutesy, nostalgic take on Brian Wilson’s achingly beautiful pop sounds. Young Dreams somewhat bravely, they blend modern, shimmering synths with a more rustic, folkie instrumentation akin to the Fleet Foxes. Really, it shouldn’t work. But it does.
Young Dreams begins with a slow-picked, REM-hearkened guitar motif and featherlight harmonies, before breaking out in restless synths that ebb and flow and gently loping drums. In its own way, it’s irresistible.
The video for this dreamy ditty is bizarre and neatly sums up what’s on offer here. It features two home-alone brats – a boy and a girl – going on a rampage through their house, culminating with a bizarre, horror-flick cliffhanger.
